Nice comparing David,

I’m not a big fan of retro but if you want to create retro interiors the it should be don seriously and not with a wink and smile. Regatta is a good example of a serious retro interior. Only thing I dislike (and that is of al modern ships) are the ceilings. On that part most new ships fail in creating something visually interesting and often fall back on simple prefabricated systems. The italian liners from the 50’s and 60’s knew how to make a ceiling as interesting too look at as the furniture in the rooms.

Yup....I have to say I was rather surprised when Bill Miller said in
The Fabulous Interiors of the Great Ocean Linersthat some of REX's interior spaces were disappointing....especially the first class dining room.

This is so true Onno and I couldn't agree with you more. Particularly on the Carnival ships, the ceiling tiles are the same throughout all of their ships (or seemingly so) and just get sometimes odd paint treatments to mask that they are just the same old cheap mass stamped material. No matter how good the floor and supporting walls are, if the ceiling looks cheap, the whole effect is ruined and in most modern ships, this is the case.

Well I think the Regatta ceilings are nicer than those of any of the "classic" ships they're being compared to.

To be honest, there's a lot that Bill Miller says that I find disappointing.

Russ the Rex was not the most modern ship around in interior design. If you compare here to the German, Frenche liners of that day. They reflect really the tast of the Mousolini regime large and overdone. In that case i agree with Miller about the Italian ships before WW2. They recembled much the past thene the futere.

Greetings Ben.

Ben:

With a few exceptions (Conte di Savoia, Neptunia, Oceania, Victoria for example) most pre-WW2 Italian interiors were based on period designs,....this I understand. I never said that the interiors of the REX were earth-shatteringly new or ground breaking, I simply implied that I like them.

Her counterstern was also a step backwards,...still, I like it.

My last post was in response to member Rex' comment about being surprised that Miller would call the interior of the REX disappointing. My point is that, over the years, I have been disappointed with some of remarks and mis-information that Miller has presented. He is always billed as "Mr. Ocean Liner" but, truth be told, much of what he writes (as well as what he says during his lectures) is fabricated (or overblown) in order to add 'pizazz'. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate his contribution in educating folks on the subject of liners,....and I've met him him and he is a nice man. It's just that I find his books and lectures interesting mainly because of the photos instead of what he has to say.

Thanks.

-Russ

Bill is a grand old queen and is VERY entertaining and quite charming. I prefer the interiors and exterior of Conte di Savoia but Rex was very grand w/her period interiors. Italia had a ship for two types of passengers, one that preferred a ship w/more modern interiors (except for that fabulous over-the-top 1st class lounge) or the flagship w/her traditional look. Both of these fantastic ships are often overlooked when classic ocean liners are discussed.

He was the lecturer on my/linerGuy/SkyRoom 2004 QM2 cruise. I met him in NYC at many ship functions. Bill Miller is very engaging in conversation and the lecturn. He was a school teacher in his earlier years.
