As posted on Maritime Matters:NORWAY Rumblings
August 13: As the NORWAY (ex FRANCE) sits anchored in the haze off Pt. Klang, Malaysia, rumors have begun to rumble once again about the 44 year old ship. Apparently, her turbines are still dismantled, making her imminent use as an active, albeit slowed-down cruise or casino ship in the region unlikely. Further, contacts in the region have reported inspections by 14 Indian scrap merchants had been undertaken and that there was a possibility the ship could be towed to Goa, India in the next few weeks.

I agree with you there , its been over a month since any news.Usually they say no news is good news but in this case no news means sneaky deals are happening.

I'm sure if something does happen it will surface pretty quick. If she does move anywhere, Im sure she wont do it without someone noticing, its not easy to move a ship that size out of sight without raising a little suspicion!

Information is not that hard to find if there is any. Keep your eyes and ears peeled on the Malaysian media. That's where the first news will most probably come from.

Even if they chose to move her under the cover of darkness and sink her as a diving reef, you'd still know about it.

Cheers

This week we found ourselves sharing the jacuzzi on the Marco Polo with a relatively senior NCL man who didn't realise he was sharing the tub with a "shippy"

His comment was that the Norway was finished and on the chopping block as Star is owned and run by one Malaysian billionaire who's major is gambling income. From the greediness of the Marco's casino I can believe that!

I would simply observe that he has eyes only for the short term bottom line, and is not of the lineage to see the potential heritage value in the Norway - just a scrap value to re-invest.

He was upbeat about the United States but I couldn't drag a word out of him about the Indy

It's odd that the Norway is still aviable ship, yet seems to be doomed, the the SS United States is just a rusty hull, yet NCL still talk optomistically about her?

I guess part of the deal with the two Prides was a promise to "Seriously" think about returning the US and Indy to service.

Official Press Release - Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)
announced on April 14, 2003 that it has purchased the S/S United States, one of the country's most venerable ships built in the glory days of trans-Atlantic sea travel. NCL intends to convert the vessel to a state-of-the art, modern cruise ship and to add her to NCL's planned US flagged fleet.

Knowing that S/S United States faced an uncertain future, NCL moved swiftly to purchase the vessel. NCL is now evaluating options for use of the ship under US flag and determining the extent of renovations needed to convert her to a state-of-the-art, modern cruise ship that will appeal to today's vacationer.

The ship is expected to offer mainland US itineraries where cruise products are not currently available. The refurbishment of the hull and superstructure will be done at US shipyards with the outfitting completed overseas.

The ship is a classic, she was built in America and is eligible to operate in domestic service under existing law and regulation," said Colin Veitch, NCL's president and CEO. "The S/S United States would be a phenomenal addition to our US flag operation down the road.

We remain focused on completing Project America and successfully introducing our innovative US flag cruise ships in Hawaii, but we will now organize a project team to work with US yards, naval engineers and architects to develop plans for what should be the fourth vessel in our US flagged fleet."

Doesn't this actually fall well into line with what NCL is doing - 3rd US flagged ship now due - SSUS next?

Yes, the point I was making is that the SSUS is next, if NCL are true to their word.

So where exactly is the SS Norway at present?

COOL

I guess SSUS is more attractive then SS Norway because she has not had the "use" that Norway has - she's relatively new in terms of mileage

Honestly, all three ships are doomed, more so now that the price of oil has ski rocketted and isn't going to come down again. It make no economic sense to save any of them. They are beautiful ships, but these are businesses and I fear that they are doomed.

I don't know about cruises, but Airlines and package holiday companies are simply adding 'Fuel Surchanges' to many UK holidays.

Another idea is to ground her and secure her in cement. She'll still be a Hotel/Casino, but she won't be floating.

This is just getting silly now. She left Bremerhaven at the end of May and still no concrete word on her future? I really don't trust them on this.
