Definitly not the Saga Rose.

Former Atlantic / now Melody?

A Superfast funnel.

It is not the Melody - a ship built in Finland?

It`s not a good day today. The upper photo seems to be the Mona Lisa / built as Kungsholm. (I have to admit that I had to see a photo of the Melody to confirm my embarassing error (I am still ashamed) - then the plaque was misleading me for a short while but I finally could not remeber many other ships with such a configuration like Kungsholm has)

Thanks for your well wishes Dambrosi, I am afraid there arent enough hours in the day now since I retired and I cant keep up with Cruisetalk, but will look in every now and then, I still love them ships though

Wasnt much of a quizz though was it, didnt take long to guess - will have to look out for some more obscure ship in future.

Cheers
M.

I know that this was not meant that seriouse - I nevertheless hope you are not disappointed about the early end of quiz.

I hear comments on how someone living in Vienna can be interested in ships nearly as frequently as how someone with my name (ernst = seriouse in German) can be so unseriouse.

It is quite funny when you think of it Ernst, out of interest just how many miles is it from Vienna to the nearest sea???? Don't you get withdrawal symptons of not being able to see the sea just when you feel like it Thank goodness I am not that far from the sea.

Cheers
M.

I really envy you. This is the only thing I miss here in Vienna. Nevertheless, I really LOVE to live in Vienna for many, many reasons, and (beside other things) I actually really miss the opera a lot when I have to stay somwhere else. (you won`t believe it, but ships are not my only passion )

From Vienna the easiest accessible "ocean" is the Adriatic (slightly more complicated is travelling to Hamburg) - so I am app. once a year in Venice or Grado and of course I try to travel by ship as often as I can. (...tough this year I have not even booked yet....grrr) Also, the danube is not a bad substitute. (and I am working on some models - when they are finished it won`t be necessary for me to go on cruise vacations anymore )

...and actually there are more "connections" to ships in Vienna (or Austria) than people are aware of:

- There are quite a lot of cruise ships on the danube.

- Very close to Vienna you find the remains of a yard which has been closed about 10 years ago - Beside many passenger vessels whereof some were transfered (on their own keel!) all the way around Europe and Scandinavia (!) to their "domain" in the former Sowjet union also some high sea going vessels were built there. (!)

- We have a well know "towing tank" where actually a lot of cruise ships had their model test (you won`t believe how many!)

- Actually a lot of Austrians are in leading positions in the hotel department on cruise ships (didn`t Royal Viking even advertise with that?)

- Some years ago the state owned "Casinos Austria" was quite dominant in the operation of cruise ship casinos.

- friends of friends own a small factory which produces textiles for cruise ships. (they did a lot for QE2)

- You actually find some really nice models in some museums (comparable to some "maritime museums") - sadly, most of the are warships - (...you know, a long, long time ago we had a Navy...)

- There are even some high sea going cargo ships which are registered in Austria.

- In Vienna we have a hydroelectric power plant with locks wich are just "one size" smaller than those in the Panama canal.

- one of the biggest scandals in Austria is related to the sinking of a cargo vessel. (Lucona)

I hope this rather long post now compensated for the short quiz.

Well Ernst you have certainly taught me a thing or two about Austria, your post was very interesting indeed, and I am sure most people reading it will enjoy hearing about all these facts.

There are still a few months left before the year end, I am sure you can manage to squeeze a cruise in somewhere, even a day trip on the Danube at least you'd be on water again.....

Cheers
M.

Luckily it is not so difficult for me to be on the water - e.g. there is a nice ferry upstream of Vienna (no engine, only the current of the danube is moving her - "feels" like a proper ship) and luckily I have already been in Venice for some days this year - so it could be worse, altough it is already quite bad.

Plans for cruises already exist, I just wait for some dates to be confirmed then I will be able to decide and book. (let`s hope I will get what I want - beside the planned cruise I wanted to squeeze in a weekend on the Color Fantasy - but this seems to be impossible until next year )
