Hello out there in LINER LAND!!!

Wanted to ask you all for help. My partner is looking for Deck Plans, exterior and interior shots of the Conte di Savoia. I do have the books Lido Fleet and Transatlantici which have some really nice photos but does anybody have any other picture or even better the deck plans. My partners parents met on the Conte di Savoia back in 1939 and he would like to surprise them with a photo collage of their meeting place. Any information would be appreicated.

Many Thanx

From Nat Geo Feb 1938 here is an Italian Line advert with a drawing of the Lido Deck on Conte di Savoia.. perhaps they booked from something similar.

Here's another Nat. Geo. advert for CONTE DI SAVOIA, this one from Sept. 1934. Peter Kohler used this image for the cover of his wonderful book "The Lido Fleet."

The Italian Line really played up the fact of their warm weather crossings, making a cruise environment on board. The renderings of their ships included ant-sized people, making their swimming pools look bigger than Olympic-size! Here's an advert from April, 1935:

Many Thanx to all of you for helping me.

It is greatly appreciated. It is interesting the artwork that the italian line put into their advertising throughout the time that their liners were in service.

It has been recommended that I take the time to travel to New York to see the Maritime Museum as well. (Unfortunately I work full time as well as take night school in International Travel and Tourism until December)

Many Thanx Again

DAVE

They are great Rich... hadn't thought about the 'ant people', would be deemed false advertising these days no doubt. Here's another, double page spread from Dec '56, of the Italian Line ships.

Conte Biancamano

There is another excellent resource available at Chapters - I am from Toronto too - (Picture History of the Italian Line) with some good shots. I was just wondering if your edition of Transatlantici is in English or Italian. I was in Italy this summer and picked up every book by Maurizio Eliseo I could get my hands on.

This includes Rex - Ship of Ships. Although not about the Conte di Savoia, it does include some information, lots of Italian line ads from the 30's - an excellent first class deck plan, and deck plans for the entire ship. Probably the best ship book I have ever seen and definitely worth the price - 70 Euros.

Now I am not sure if your background is Italian or not - mine is - but in Trieste, Italy, there are dozens of antique shops that have sgip memorabilia. I did see a beautiful framed glass photo - looked like an advertising shot, and a soup tureen from the Conte di Savoia. So if you have the opportunity to get to Trieste you will find many souvenirs.

E-mail if you have any other questions - RD

There is a good book on the Italian Line called

The Lido Fleet

by Peter Kohler

He contributes on Liner's List. Peter is full of good information, but is overly emotional and can be opinionated.
