From Maritime Matters:

"NORWAY Rumblings
August 13: As the NORWAY (ex FRANCE) sits anchored in the haze off Pt. Klang, Malaysia, rumors have begun to rumble once again about the 44 year old ship. Apparently, her turbines are still dismantled, making her imminent use as an active, albeit slowed-down cruise or casino ship in the region unlikely. Further, contacts in the region have reported inspections by had been undertaken and that there was a possibility the ship could be towed to Goa, India in the next few weeks."

Well, seems that she is going for scrap anyway..."14 Indian scrap merchants "!

Anyone who is a regular reader to these boards will not be surprised about the news on M/Matters.

Seems that NCL had this planned all along and now that she is on the other side of the world its easier to get rid of her quickly.

Shame on NCL for the lies........

If the latest reports on the ss Norway prove to be correct it starts one thinking about what plans NCL / Star Cruises may have for the ss United States and the ss Independence.

It is quiet obvious that shipping companies now want new larger ships with a high number of passengers on board which can be operated at the minimum of costs.

Diesel engined ships fit this profile and it looks as if the days of steam engined passenger ships being used for cruising is coming to a close.

United States and Independence are different cases than the Norway. (stripped empty hull (in the case of United States), U.S. built etc.) Steam powered ships are not only not profitable but also a bit more risky. If there is any chance to see the United States coming back to service chances are high that she will be reengined.

I don't usually defend NCL, but in this one particular case I believe all they have stated in regards to NORWAY is that she will NOT be returned to the NCL fleet, and that parent company Star Cruises has other plans for her. What those other plans are is anyone's guess .... maybe even to the executives of NCL? NCL headquarters is half a world away from parent company Star Cruises. I think NCL has it's plate full dealing with NCL America and all the new ships that NORWAY is not even a concern of theirs. I think they have pretty much washed their hands of the ship, and it's up to Star Cruises now.

If NORWAY ends up at the scrap yard I will be disappointed, but in some ways it's better then lingering and floundering as some half-schemed Asian casino boat. It might be time to let this liner die, as she has had a very long and fruitful life. I would rather not see her end up like ORIANA or QUEEN ELIZABETH.

Ernie - who doesn't trust Star Cruises one bit!

Ernie, I tend to agree with you. NCL definitely is busy with NCLA and the Jewel right now. They're done with Norway. As much of an emotional tie I have to the Norway, any forthcoming decision has to be better than the lingering and non-stop "what if" posts. Speculation will do nothing and the whole "but maybe she'll be a floating Asian casino" does nothing for me as I don't plan to fly to Hong Kong to relive the glory days. Even if I were to visit her again, she'd be nothing like how I remember her anyhow.

Folks it's time to face reality. The cruise industry is a business and they will never make money on the Norway, SSUS or the Independence again. With the price of oil / fuel these ships even completely reworked will never be efficent. They will make more money in the scrap steel market then trying to revive these classic ladies. It's sad, but it's the truth, no matter what the say at NCL. the money from the scrap of these 3 will most likely pay for 1/3 or more of another Star / Jewel class ship, which will make them a whole lot of money.

I would love to see these classic return, but with oil prices and steel prices where they are. .it's not going to happen. Hope I am wrong, but I doubt it.

I agree with Ernie. I rather have her gone than rot away. I hope Star finds a nice way to preserve the NORWAY, but I know its very unlikely...

I don`t hope that NORWAY will be scrapped... but who will give her a new future? And NCL? It would be no surprise for me if it was planned for al long time to send her to the breakers...

Geez! Haven't we had enough of the NCL conspiracy and lies nonsense concerning Norway in the last 2 years? Instead of knocking NCL for getting rid of a 43 year-old ship, wouldn't it be better to thank them for giving an out-of-work liner that was unsuited to cruising a 23-year new lease on life and leave it at that?

France/Norway has had a remarkable career. But she has had her day. Forget the idiotic casino crap. Scrap her and get it done with.

Well said, Brian! Most of us dearly loved the FRANCE/NORWAY, but it's her time to go. Might as well pick a fight with the airlines for not using Super Constellations or DC7s any more!

NCL/Star may have tricked everyone. Had they stripped her in Germany of her original SS France fixtures (such as the murals from the former 1st class playroom, 1st class dining room panels etc.) we all would have known what was her fate. Now if she is sold for scrap, will those items (among others) be removed and shipped back to Europe or the U.S. for preservation?? Ocean liner collectors the World over IMO would be very interested in having a piece of SS France and those famous artifacts would command a high price. I think even Star must know the value of her original fixtures to collectors and not have them ripped out and dumped on a scrapper's beach.

Well you know? Sure the France/Norway has served her time but there are much younger people (like me) who havent even gotton to catch a glimps of her. I have been desperat to cruise aboard her and now Im not going to because she is going to be scrapped! Its just like the Queen Mary. If she had been scrapped I wouldnt get into ocean liners and understand how amazing and great they where. There are a lot of young people (like me) who dont understand how great Ocean Liners where. With the France/Norway still hear, they will be able to understand how much of an inpact they put on society in their glory days. Sure the France/Norway has served her main time. But like the Queen Mary . . . she can make the world understand the true meaning of Ocean Liners . . . maybe not the whole world . . . but enough. And for people like me who hasnt been able to experiance the true Ocean Liners of back then . . .

I just hope that someone organizes a crew to document her dismantling. They don't take liners her size apart very often and it will bring much insight into 1950's era shipbuilding to get an up-close look at her as she is pulled apart. The second and last Yourkevich hull coming to an end. How sad.

What can you do with an old ship that need zillions to make her legally seaworthy?

Im not saying the ship has to sail again. But like zillions of people are saying: to make her a hotel and tourist attraction like the Queen Mary. Sure it will take alot of money. But if everyone works together, maybe we can just pull it off. We just got to pray to the Lord and hope that the liner is saved

I agree with the Norway should be a casino/hotel. They say they dont make money, well their not much different than a regular hotel/casino, actually they're probably better especially the Norway!

The Queen Mary is only having problems now because of Management and lease issues and they didnt do what they could do with the Norway as she is newer and has many things the QM never had!

The QM was never a casino ship and her accomodation is older and she had too many renos done to her and alterations!

The Norway on the other hand could probably compete with any major hotel if she was set up and run right with the proper renovations done to her! And she could have the biggest casino in Asia too!

Well I didnt mean when the France/Norway becomes a hotel for her to compeat with the Queen Mary. As being the QMs #1 fan and going to her freakquently, I know that the QM is a beautiful Ocean Liner (she still is and Ocean Liner) and being older than the France/Norway, she has more . . . experiance (per-say), and hasnt been converted into a casino cruiser (not saying the France/Norway is a cruise ship).
What Im saying is that the Queen Mary is just as much of an Ocean Liner as the France/Norway and shouldnt be refered to in the way you put her. Not trying to be rude but I do feel a little offended at what you are saying. For I think both the QM and F/N can make great hotels and work together at making Ocean Liners come back to life . . .

Lets face it Norway is done I love the ship but she was moved so she could be scrapped. I am so Happy to have taken the time to sail her before she ended her career. As for my jinxing ships here goes. Sailed the Enchanted Isle 1996, sailed the Universe Explorer 1999, sailed Norway 2001.All srapped. ANybody want to bet on the next ships? I sailed Regal Empress 2005? Sailed Carnival Escasy 1994 fire onboard months after I left. Airtours Carousel 1995? struck sand bar broke prop year after sailing her. I love my ships but maybe I should stay off of them.

Time for me to put in my Million Dollar thoughts...it's worth more than a penny...
I hate lies and deceit, that's what NCL has done. Hide all the info, keep it quiet; hoping no one will care.....to bad. I still do, just like many others for this lovely liner.
I'm grateful that I got to sail on her 3 times..a 4th would have been even better.
Just one more chance to document her interiors that I did'nt get the last time. Like I managed to get shots of where the Children's Playroom is not far from the Conference Room is at, it's Forward and it USED to be a Dog Kennel. But, think of all of the other interiors shots I missed because I was hoping to get one more time.
Grant it, the new liners are HUGE...to me too HUGE and they want to build BIGGER????? What for?? There is so much tonnage out there, they'll NEVER get to fill all of the passenger rooms. The size of the SS NORWAY, BIG U and INDY, plus many other past liners are just perfect. Also grant it, the interiors on the new behemoths are also elegant. But, the lack personality. Which all of the older ships had and some still have that are around.
I'm just not happy.

Too sad and frustrating, but probably unavoidable.

I've heard this comment over the past 30 years since I've been in the cruise industry, when no-one thought they could fill the 37,000 ton TROPICALE, and so on. The fact is that these huge ships are always sailing full--quite a few sailings are already sold out for next year!

I understand your point, and I do agree with you personally. But the reality is that these big new ships with all the "bells and whistles" create more demand, and they do sell out!

I think, at the end, we all realise, that ships have a useful span of life, and afterwards they cant compete with the new ones. It is so with almost everything.

The thing I resent is that they (including apparently France) have to DISAPPEAR.

PAssengerships/liners are among the greatest(biggest) manmade objects, and certainly the most beautiful, a real testimony to human genius, creativity and talent, but what do we got after 165 years of motorised (as opposed to sail) international important passenger ships : SS Great Britain, Doulos, Queen Mary, SSUS, Constitution, and that is about it..., with only Great Britain more or less safe.

I don't want France/Norway to go to Alang, to have a "dignified" end. With a slowly decaying pension, there is always the hope something happens as with the Great Britain, which was miraculously saved after decades as an almost completely rotten and decayed hulk.

J
