Superb photos. Her liner profile is very much still intact. Has anyone else noticed that it appears her deadlights have all been closed? I thought so in her Bremerhaven departure pics, but wasn't certain. I notice it as well in these pictures.

Thinking back to the pictures of Monterey/Britanis in her final moments(!), would it be SUCH a bad thing for France/Norway to end her days at sea? Or would we all (let's NOT debate this to death..... again), rather see her made a floating cut-rate casino, stripped faux museum, or "mens club" overnight destination?

Long may she sail in our memories as SS France & SS Norway.

Mariposa,

all deadlights up to Norway Deck and the forward ones up to Pool Deck (if I remember correctly) have been put on her portholes.

Best,

Raoul

I once took a self escorted personized tour of NORWAY between sailings in Miami. I truly regret that I never sailed in her.

I remember seeing pictures of the ACHILLE LAURO on fire and this is the same way I feel when I see pictures of the NORWAY being towed now. Like seeing a ghost of a dear and departed friend. To me it seems like she is already dead...

The images have a 'not real' quality about them?

What do you mean Malcolm? Are you saying NCL dumped the ship of the coast and lets digitally altered pictures go into the media to keep up appearances? As they say in the X files “trust no one”

I think Malcolm means that they seem "surreal", right?

I agree with Malcom, those pictures do not look real, well I guess I mean sur-real. They are like the Princess Cruises brochure pictures.

I know what Malcolm means. They seem to have been manipulated, maybe in Photoshop. But they are real pics.

She does look good.

On the Smit Tugs website is a picture of the ss Norway off Cape Town, having arrived on the 1st July, with another of their tugs the Smit Amandla in attendance while the De Da is in port taking on bunkers.

Okay I'm glad you brought it up Malcom!

To say the least I think that they were modified. Something about the waterline, lighting, etc.

I was hoping it wasn't just me! ....

Sorry Malcolm, I misunderstood your post. I do see what you mean, just a bit too much whitening of the false teeth & over use of unsharp mask I think.

The contrast between the rusty boot topping and the still clean dark blue hull (against the brilliant blue choppy sea) give that 'not real' look IMO.

I think it`s not so much the quality of the pictures but the fact that we see the Norway at sea in pristine condition. (at least form the outside)

Pictures of the tow of the ss Norway being handed back to the De Da at Cape Town on the 6th July 2005 are now on the Smits Tugs website so she will now be on her way again to go round the Cape and on to either Port Klang or Singapore.

The pictures have been taken by a person on the Smit tug Smit Amandla which attended the Norway while the Chinese tug De Da was in port.

South African sources are saying that the tow from Cape Town to either Port Klang or Singapore is expected to take from 6 to 7 weeks depending on the weather.

Malcom,
I agree with you....
Today's cameras have got that "studio effect" though, as I found out to my surprise with my new Samsung...
Even Webcams can create illusions as Pam and I found out with ssNorway in a Bremerhaven webcam!

I would imagine that close-up she would have a bit more discoloration with her paint etc.

Like most ships, she looks better from a distance. Her paintwork looked fine when she departed Germany except for small patches of rust on her lower hull and superstructure. She looked to be in better condition (paint wise) than in photos I have seen of her as ss France during her last years in French Line service.

Has anyone been able recently to get the pics posted in the original post on this thread? I've been trying over the last few days but to no avail.

If you go to the main Norway page of Table Bay Underway Shipping, you should be able to copy & paste the URLs for the photos. There are however 2 I haven't been able to view.

Thanks, Pam. There's obviously a compatibility problem somewhere as I can't get onto any page on that server. I'll have to try at home when I can.
