Hello!
Tom again, does anyone have deck plans of the S/S NORTHERN STAR of the Shaw-Savill Lines? I have never seen any deck plans . Did it have 2 outdoor pools. I see she was somewhat of a lemon as a ship. I guess that's why she only had a 12 year career. I think she would have made a great cruise ship like her near sister, the SOUTHERN CROSS/CALYPSO/AZURE SEAS/OCEAN BREEZE/IMPERIAL MAJESTY.

The "Southern Cross" and "Northern Star" were not too much different, I believe they were pretty close to Identical twins!

One main pool with ajoining kids pool. Southern Cross had an indoor and outdoor pool, thus two pools.

Indoor pool on Southern Cross not repeated on NS because water splashed around so badly on SC.

Southern Cross had a centre alleyway layout to cabin decks not replicated on NS.

It was mechanical problems that ended NS - cf the different fortunes of their contemporaries P&O Arcadia and Iberia.

Calypso had two pools on Lower Bridge deck and Boat deck.

Ocean Monarch had a center alleyway but midships only though Calypso had none.

Although Southern Cross and Northern Star had similar profiles they were not twins. Northern Star was a larger "improved" version being 46 feet longer and 5 feet wider. She also carried approximately 250 more passengers than Southern Cross.

The indoor pool on Southern Cross was superb, always sloshing around and great fun. Here's one of the onboard postcards:-

It looks somewhat larger there than it was in reality though. I have copies of the original deckplans of Southern Cross, but I've never seen any of NS either.

There are some in Aus on Ebay from 1972

When Southern Cross converted into full-time cruiseship as Calypso, Indoor pool was removed and replaced by Nymphe's Cave Disco.

Calypso's cabin confugulations were mostly 1(Portside) - 2(inside) - 1(Starboard) except "A" Deck :1(Portside) - 1(inside) - 1(Starboard) and Restaurant Deck : 1(Portside) - 1(Starboard).

Why was it that Northern Star was "worn out" in
12 years? Was it neglect or was she troublesome
from the start?

My dad's got 2 reels of grainy cine film he took of her leaving Southampton for the last time. But he's got the date as the 5th November 1975 and a NZ website (can't remember the title off hand) says it left on the 7th. It's a shame she wasn't bought by someone else like Southern Cross. 12 years is such a short life when you consider how others continued far longer.
