On March 19, 1993 I took an afternoon cruise from Antwerpen to Zeebrugge on board the Achille Lauro (together with my brother) thus passing the birth place of Achille Lauro as Willem Ruys in Vlissingen.

During this trip I took some pictures. I managed to scan them and put them in an album (via unorthodox ways).

Here is a pic of Achille Lauro on the quay in Antwerpen

The arrival of such a famous liner was a special occasion, so she was sent of with some ceremony

Another picture on the quay

The spectacular funnels

Farewell in Zeebrugge

I have also some interior pics in my album, that I strangely enough can't open, so I can't post a link to it...

I hope you like the pics.

It is of course a long time ago, but still interesting, I thought

Johan

Thanks for sharing your photos! She was an interesting classic ship, and I'm sorry I never got to sail on her.

Linerdan- Achille Lauro was the first ship I sailed on also... back in 1990?

The pic below was taken when docked in Fremantle, Western Australia. I dont know if my dad was more interested in taking a photo of his new car or the ship behind!

Thanks a lot Johan for your photos.

One of my favourites with a lot of charm.
I love many many ships but for unkown reason, this one did inspire me something more, something that only few ships are (were) able to inspire to me, quite strange but I'd say this is something like respect.

Hi Dan - our cruise was from Singapore - Fremantle Dec 91... the one thing that stands out *(i was only young) was the fact that they showed the hijacking movie whilst onboard~!

since then ive also been on 4 cruises~! Id be interested in hearing your thoughts on the QE2 vs Achille Lauro... my parents would love to sail on the qe2 one day - purely for the experience. however sorry to say but after experiencing the brand new sapphire princess i think it would be hard to go back to an 'old' ship!

below is the cover of the 'paper ticket' we had for our cruise! the papers pretty thin... infact if you look hard enough you may see the 'conditions' written on the reverse side!

Hi again , yes they showed the Movie on my cruise as well (they said it was asked by popular demand!) so i guess it was showing all the time...lol.The funny thing i remember was after the movie was finnished everybody would go out on the deck and look where the shoooting took place and where the wheel chair man was thrown over the side.I too have my tickets, and kept all the papers and bits that helps me remember my cruise.

On the last day while packing a Star-lauro tea cup and saucer and sliver spoon accidently fell into my bag , i did feel guilt for a while but once she burned and sanked i knew then it wasnt that bad as i saved a piece from her and keep it till this day

Johan realy great pictures.

I think she's one off the best designed passenger vessels ever build in the Netherlands fact stays that after she was put in service she was the Netherlands second biggest liner (after Nieuw Amsterdam) till Statendam off '57.

Certainly she could match the beautty off the Nieuw Amsterdam. And much better looking thene here compettetor Oranje.

Here a picture just taken after the war she's berthed at the Royal Rotterdam Lloyd terminal together with the other famous Rotterdam liner Nieuw Amsterdam. Both showing there very refind good looks. It's a shame that RRL sold here and not made cruises with here after the round the world service collapsed.

Greatings Ben.

Thanks for the pics Johan! Phil: Love the photo in Fremantle - do you have any others?

My cousins were aboard Achillie Laro on one of her last voyages. They did Cape Town to London via Suez.

Nice pictures Johan and thanks for sharing.

It looks like your photo’s could have been taken yesterday, I wonder if she did not catch fire (and was maintained better) would she still be sailing MSC?

I believe not...

Achille Lauro was already quite old... Pre War built... and the company should have spent an high sum of money to upgrade her accomodations.

Frankly she was a very nice ship... the only one in the Starlauro fleet of the Early Nineties to feature private balconies.

With two pools, a tennis camp and a wide range of public lounges she was very popular here in Italy... many persons thought that she was even better than Eugenio Costa.

Friends who travelled with the Achille Lauro - I didn`t- allowed me to scan some photos & memorabilia. The quality is not so good, but in case of her holding something back is not an option.

Great pictures from all who have posted.

Achille Lauro looks, I think, like a great liner should.

A great collection of photos Ernst. I did make comment here about a few; but seems the post was 'lost'.

Is this a pile of bags? or what? on sale in the foyer, or something else entirely?

The picture with Ausonia is wonderful.

It is an onboard sale - in an egyptian port. There are chances that I find more pictures of Ausonia. (and maybe even of Italia )
