I just saw Cruise News Trivia Question:

quote:

Last Week's Question
Beginning in March of 1989, Cunard's QE2 was out of service for 72 days. Why was she out of service?

Answer - To celebrate the 130th anniversary of the City of Yokohama a consortium of Japanese companies chartered the QE2 for 72 days from March 27th 1989. She docked alongside the passenger terminal as a central attraction and although she did not go to sea she maintained her status as an ocean liner.

In fact, She arrived on March 27 then served as Hotel ship in Yokohama from March 31 to June 3.
At the time, Yokohama Exotic Showcase(EXPO) '89 held at MM21 in Yokohama from March 25 to October 1.
She Left from Yokohama on June 4 and arrived Honolulu on June 9 on Charter Cruise.

However, Cunard's brochure did not shown the QE2's schedule between March 10(at Sydney) and June 9(at Honolulu).

Did Cunard offer special cruise from Sydney to Yokohama in March 1989?

QE2 1989 Pacific Cruise ended at Sydney on March 10th 1989 and Hawaii Cruise started at Honolulu on June 9th.
I assure QE2 arrived at Yokohama on March 27th

Can anyone fill the gap between March 10th and March 27th 1989?

Our first crossing on the QE2 from New York took place in early July 1990. It was my understanding that prior to our crossing, she had been on charter to the Japanese. Not sure how long that charter was for, tho?

QE2 again headed to Japan for about Six months charter.
QE2 arrived at Honolulu on December 21st via Panama Canal, Mexico and Los Angeles, etc.

QE2 Chartered to Japanese Company on this day and left for Tokyo.
She arrived in Tokyo on December 28th and based there until March 27th, during the period, she served as Hotel Ship and also made a few cruises to Kaohsiung, Hong Kong and Bali, etc.

QE2 finally left from Tokyo on March 27th for Osaka via Masan(near Pusan).

QE2 arrived in Osaka on March 31st and offered as Hotel Ship for 59 nights and rest of the days were spared for cruises until June 14th.

QE2 left from Osaka on that day and arrived in Honolulu on June 19th and resumed Cunard service.

QE2's 1990 first Transatlantic Crossing was 150th Anniversary Transatlantic Crossing and left from New York on July 17th.

Ocean Liners,

You are correct about it being the 150th Anniversary Transatlantic Crossing - we have the poster - but the date was July 7th. Here's a copy of my ticket.

I suspect that Colt was on the same crossing.

Exactly, I misread that the July 7th sailing was the first Transatlantic crossing though Cunard Sold Fve special "150th Anniversary Voyage" were July 17th, 22nd and 28th, August 27th and September 1st Voyages only.

July 7th sailing was sold as regular transatlantic crossing in Q1240 brochure.

Actually the July 17th crossing was QE2's third crossing of 1990. It was preceded by the July 7-12 Eastbound and July 12-17 Westbound crossings.

Joe:

It's hard to read the smudged numbers but you seem to have been given a $10 discount on the port taxes and handling charges. Must have known someone in the office, huh?
