There is a line in Maxtone-Graham's book Liners to the Sun in the Dark Nights chapter where he talks about suicides at sea particularly being in the water and watching the lights of your ship disappearing over the horizon. If this happens in the North Atlantic you probably wouldn't last too long but I don't think it would be all that pleasant.
Longer cruises seem safer than short ones, but never go on deck on the last evening.
If you come from California or Virginia, it's probably best to give up drinking or avoid ships completely.
AUTHORITIES in the UK are not investigating the suicide of a passenger who leapt to his death from his cabin on the liner Queen Mary 2.
German pensioner Gerd Koch, 82, plunged 100ft from the ship after boarding in Southampton last Saturday.
The liner's skipper searched unsuccessfully all night for Mr Koch. Weather conditions were stormy. Mr Koch had paid extra for a cabin with a balcony overlooking the ocean on the six-day voyage to New York.
He left a suicide note at his home in Germany, which was found by his wife.
