Yes, thats true, maritimematters confirms that Big Red Boat II is already in Gibraltar, in her way to Alang. It's very sad to me, i had much hope that she could be back to service, but im sure that now she isn't.

There is a photo of her taken earlier this week taking on bunkers on another site. She looked a bit rusty but still sleek and modern.

I think it was somewhere around 10-11 million!! I dont know how anyone could not have seen her real potential, sure she has steam engines but so do many other ships that do quite fine!!

Did that cost also include re-tubing her? Anyone have a guess how much it would have cost to have her refurbished and ready to cruise again?

If I am correct there is only a handfull of steamships that is still in service. Another factor is the condition of the boilers, generators, turbines, etc. If everything is in good condition, yes a steamship can gut out a few more years of life...if the condition is bad, then nothing much can be done. There are many non steamships that are laid up, and in a business sense, a non steamship more economical than a comparable steamship

In fact, although not false, this affirmation is rather far fetched since the steam turbine on the MILLENNIUM class provides force for a 9MW alternator only compared to the 2X25MW alternators driven by the gas-turbines themselves.

All of this electrical energy is diluted through all the hotel and auxiliary devices and it's quite safe to affirm very few (if any, except on no frequent occasions) of the electricity provided by the steam turbine is used for the propulsion of the ship itself.

it really is a shame that the BRB II to is off to the beaches. As i have said too many times on these boards she is in good condition and could have many more cruises ahead, alas it seems it is not to be.
The retube of her boiler prior to the scrap run wouldn't have cost that much, it would only have been a partial retube. my bet is a few screen and side wall tubes in a couple of boilers.
In a post above it is asked how much she would need to get cruising again, i would say two million dollars and three weeks or so would be all that is needed to see the first punters on her gangways enjoying a classic.
lets hope the Rotterdam makes it home and the Oceanic stays around a while.

yes feargus... You speak from experience and as u served on the BRBII until Premier went under...u would surely know more than anyone else on the board what it would cost to have her cruising again!

Too bad she couldn't have found a buyer...How long before she gets to Alang and how much did she sell to the breakers for??

I think there is a bigger one in New Zealand I will try and find out. They let you go into the engine room while underway and watch it runn.

Two million dollars to get her back cruising sounds like peanuts. I just wonder if she still can be snapped up before arriving at Alang. MTC had her listed for sale at $USD15million.

The building of the new millionaires hartshape Dreamland at sea means a serious logistic and accomodation shortage.
A floating hotel would be perfect! May be two..with ssNorway?
