Indeed. Congrats on taking on such a huge project. I bought mine and have been working on it off-and-on for the last month. Still have about another 6-8 weeks worth of work to do on her. Bought over $100 just in model paints!

It took some painstaking effort to mix the paints to get the right look for the decks. Used the QM2 and Cunard brochures for some good pictures of her for paint colors. I bought Tamiya spray Hull Red for the bottom. I did sand it down first with a very very fine sand paper. Makes the paint stick better. Looks wonderful. Also one thing that helps a lot: buy some sheet styrene .2mm thick at a local hobby store and spray paint it gloss black, cut it down to size and glue to the backside of the upper and lower balconies for a more realistic (not see-thru) look. If you have any questions email me and maybe I can help with more advice...:-)

P.S. Another help was this site:

http://www.maritimereplicas.com/queenMaryPics.htm

It helps in getting the colors mixed right for some great detail and some bit of accuracy.

The forcastle deck forward forward and aft of the 'whaleback' in reality is painted in a very light grey (not the tan shown on the model). The deck 6 Minnow's pool is surrounded in a medium tan decking material and not the tan/greyish color of natural teak decking on the other passenger decks. A difficult color to match is the 'Federal Grey' of the hull. It is a very dark blueish grey color. I applied an off-white paper backing (on the inside portion of the hull) to the windows in the hull for them to stand out against the dark hull paint. For the upper verandah sliders and superstructure windows, I applied a black paper backing to give the windows depth and to not be able to look into the model. It is IMO an approx. a 100 hour model if done more or less correctly. Have a blast building it!!!

I got three (3) Revell kits and one Heller kit for Christmas. At least I stopped my friends to buy Titanic books.

Gday all

Been a while since ive done any ship models but thought i would pass on a tip. When glueing very small and detailed parts , i find its best to use a disposable syringe (needle) to place small amounts of glue onto tiny parts.Only fill the syringe half way and when not been used just dub a small amount of blue tack on the end to stop the air getting in.Once you finnish for the day throw that away and get a fresh syring for the next time you sit down and start the model again.
It makes it so much easier and you have much better control over the job.
Regards Dan

How are you getting on Moodus2? My son got the Airfix kit for Christmas and he started it 10 days or so ago.. every 5 mins he was calling me for help... we have slaved, literally over the thing every hour of the day, and because he won't do things in order, and in a rush, it's a bit of a mess [well bad mess in places]. It is horrendous to build and more of a 'trying my patience' exercise with the many decals which I hate. Anyhow, finished off today, and I took a few snaps before it falls apart, which I guarantee will happen!

I hope you have more patience than a 9yr old and make a better job of the bigger one

Pam,

If it is any comfort, my mom used to build my models when I was a kid as well (and I must have made her crazy at times). I used to be impatient as well, instead of taking the time to paint little details like rockets I thought it was easier to dip them in the little paint can. I lost many parts that way.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a the collection of a fellow ship modeller and he had build and painted the airfix QM2 as a fantasy troop ship all in grey with deck guns etc, that was so funny to see.

Just for fun I photographed my scratch build QM2 with SOL model, talk about size difference!

Pam,

nice model. I guess you are right it will fall apart, like my Airfix France did... I will go trough the same very soon: The son of a friend of mine, being eleven years old, found some models at auction on ebay, and is convinced that we will get rich by biuilding all the "redundant" plastic kits I have - his plan is of course to keep one for him, and maybe one for me - (..I am afraid this might again keep me from posting more photos)

Onno,

impressive picture. Now we know that QM2 passengers might very likely be disturbed by the exhaust of other cruise ships passing by.

Greetings

Ernst

You are right Ernst, I haven’t thought about that!
There are a lot of little 70’s heavy smokers out there that could cause some annoyance for passengers on large ships.

Maybe this is the niche for some older ships to survive: They could be used to tender passengers ashore. "Little Norway" was yesterday!

Your models are excellent Onno, but sad to say, I just would not have the patience.

quote:
I used to be impatient as well, instead of taking the time to paint little details like rockets I thought it was easier to dip them in the little paint can. I lost many parts that way.

Well, there are supposed to be 8 blades in front of the bridge. We have 4 1/2. One got broken and 3 are in the bottom of a paint pot! The bow flagpole got 'lost'.. it's now a toothpick. [The flags were supposed to have the Cunard logo on them, but ours were just red, and that flag did not fit round the toothpick properly].

The bridge does not meet the superstructure for some reason, and I cannot force it, so there is a little gap. The Lookout 'windscreen' got broken in 2 [he will not cut, but twists the parts off the plastic frame], so now it doesn't fit properly either. Twisting off the propellers, broke a couple of blades, glued back on awkwardly.

Some of the parts themselves were not quite right anyway. I had to shave the sliding pool covers as they were too wide to fit.

A few of the lifeboats are facing the wrong direction He did not want to waste time mixing the paint, so all the decks are different colours. The paint on the lifeboats is so thick, he ran out of orange before finishing them. Some of the decals got torn... but he'll learn and I rescued a lot.

So a BIG mess... now he tells me he 'forgot' he had made a light to go inside, so tomorrow wants to prise the superstructure off, put it inside and cut a hole for a switch. This evening may be the only time the thing is in one piece, but for £25 not bad entertainment. The troopship must have been fun.

Ernst... tell the friend he may get richer selling the unmade models But I hope you enjoy and have more patience than me for such things. The most rewarding part is seeing the look of satisfaction on a child's face when something is finished.. even if it is poor, they still made it, so it doesn't matter.

Pam

I am afraid this is impossible. Before I will sell them all, I will nevertheless negotiate, whether I may keep one, and also I am quite curiouse if he really wants to sell a model he built. (We talk here about 3 (!) Revell QM2 kits, 2 Canberras 2 Queen Mary kits and one Airfix QE2 kit which accumulated over the years) He got inspired to do this, when he saw the paper crib we built before chistmas in a shopping window at a "high" price, and learnt about all the unbuilt models I got....silly enough, my Christmas present for him was a Heller QM2 kit....based on his "expierience" - his model looks far worse than yours, but it`s still is in one piece, so there is some hope for you - he expects to save time in building them paralell....

Pam your story sounds all too familiar, in the end it is all about the fun you had regardless of someone’s skill.
Just one tip, don’t throw the model away regardless of how it looks. Howard will enjoy it if he sees it again in 10-15 years time. I recently found some old cardboard fantasy space ships I made when I was 8 years old, in my mind (especially at that time) they looked very sleek. Somehow today they don’t really match the recollection I had of them.

I guess it is generally not really a good idea - but why not going outside building her? If you do not have a garden, terrace or balcony, you can maybe do the one or the other thing in a park, if you find a table there.

P.S.: Bring some photos of the models, if you can! Thank You!

I have a bit the same memories.

When a child, I made all the models that were available (not Canberra, I got this model only some years ago and has now pride of place in my home)
My mother helped me paint it, but I did the assembly myself.
My first model of the "France" when i was 7 or so, and which started my intrest in liners, was quite bad, and I trashed it later, though i hung the starboard hull piece on my bedroom wall as decoration.
I made it later, and this was better. My "Oriana" model fell apart, (and I was not particularly caring for it as I didn't really know Oriana then : my dutch language books very rarely mentioned here, it was only later i was able to read the english ones...

Ernst, making models in good weather in the garden is very very pleasant (though wind can be tricky). It is also safer if a pot of paint falls....

The QM2 as a troopship must be an impressive sight, but i sincerely hope it will never come to that in reality.

My childhood models became dustcollectors, and weren't very good. They are now in my parents attic.

I have a lot of unmade models, one of them a very expensive and difficult one of the titanic, (which cost more thatn 100 EUR 13 years ago) and which is way too difficult for me.

Airfix QE2 lays for more than a year almost painted in the box, but has to be assembled. QE2, Pilsudski, and a smaller Titanic remain to be done...

Pam, your son's QM2 looks quite impressive on the pics, I must say..wouldn't it best to cut a whole in the bottom of the ship, rather than chopping of the superstructure to insert a light ? (He must have seen that wonderful Rotterdam model on E-Bay some days ago...)

Nice models Pam&Onno.
But QM2's hull seems like an extremely dark blue and gray rather than black like in those models.

I just bought this model today for $100 CDN Now I need a strong magnifying glass to read the extremely fine print on the first few pages of the instructions. Given my other activities, it will probably take all summer to complete.

Well done Pam
My first model Titanic and it sank in a stream nearby as it fell apart!
It took me 3 Airfix Lizzies to get it right then hurricane Hugo destroyed it!
My first QM1 was not too bad.
Your QM2 is actually quite a challenge and I am impressed!
Your table top is perfect for reflection...
Would never have thought about it
Can I send you my Revell QM2?
