Suggestion for a twist of fate:

Use the SS Norway for a remake of the 1959 film "The Last Voyage". Since the original used the "Ile de France" (much to the shock the French people), wouldn't it be interesting (!) to use the 3rd generation successor in the remake? Imagine the explosions! A torrential waterfall cascading down the Windward dining room stairs! The piano in Club Internationale doing somersaults as an explosion rips through the North Cape lounge! A tidal wave roaring along Viking Deck! The opening scenes filmed in the Leeward dining room ablaze! Oh, the horror! Oh, the EXCITEMENT!

What a tribute! And imagine the footage of the beloved FRANCE/NORWAY saved to film forever???

Since it seems I've gone off the deep end already, how about casting? Another Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan pairing? No? How about Russell Crowe & Nicole Kidman?

As long as this topic (the fate of SS Norway) seems to be harder to kill than a cockroach, I welcome your ideas.

Cheers!

This does put into perspective the horror that the French (and others) felt about the beloved ILE DE FRANCE when it was announced that these things were going to happen to her! But at least through this film we do have lots of onboard images of her!

My thought exactly. To my knowledge, "The Last Voyage" is the best documentation (images) of a traditional liner because of her starring role in this film. As long as a ship will be scrapped and forgotten (other than our prized memories), why not take a professional film crew aboard and capture the glorious interiors and striking, majestic exteriors before her demise.

MOST doubtful that this will come to pass, but with all the speculation regarding her fate - why not?

I think shooting a film about a boiler explosion on the Norway would be very tasteless. Don`t forget that people died in this accident.

Yes, but a documentary would be interesting.

Wow... and I thought that curtailing the purchase of wine was a little extreme way of protesting against the French...

(I already posted this) The France appeares in the following films:

Le Cerveau / The Brain (Belmondo, David Niven)

In this gangster comedy, she appears in the end, with a model of the statue of liberty on her bow.

Le Gendarme à New York (Louis de Funes)

In this (not so good movie) there are scenes during a crossing aboard. (A group of french policmen travels to New York)

There is another Louis de Funes movie, where she appears in the end, but I do not remeber the title. (The one, where he tries to hide a dead body in his house)

This list is of course not complete. This only what I remeber in this moment.

I would cast Anthony Hopkins as the Captain, George Clooney and Sharon Stone as the protagonists.

from REX:Sharon Stone needs a house to fall on her. I guess a bulkhead will suffice.

The last one is "Monsieur Jo", from the early 70's.
I didn't know "France" really appeared there.
He hides the dead man in a steamer trunk marked "SS France", but I thought he loses it somewhere under the way, before reaching the ship.
I must be 20 years I saw that film, which I found at the time rather good.
Les Gendarmes à new york, isn't that bad, typicalle french farce, but much better than later Gendarme films (which are cardboard awful). This was the second in the series. These first two depict a nice image of Saint-Tropez in the glamourous sixties.

The scenes aboard France are very worthwhile.

She was renamed as Furansu maru when the film was taken.

How about the remake of the Poseidon?
This could pay towards the cost of making her environmentally friendly?
At last the hull would remain...

This is PERFECT casting!! Stone might actually out-do the histrionics of Malone in the original. How about Jack Black as the Chief Engineer? A bit over-the-top, but no more so than Edmond O'Brien! Now that Jamie Foxx has an Oscar, he'd be out of the running to replace Woody Strode...............

(((((((((((((Desirod))))))))))))))

You remembered my distaste for media bimbo Sharon Stone.

Who'd play Woody Strode's character? The big guy from "The Green Mile"?

Well then, he and Halle Berry could re-create the Stack/Malone characters and the big girl from "The Parkers" could play their daughter. Kevin James from "The King of Queens" could take the Strode part. Talk about inspired casting.

I think it would be a more dramatic film to have the ship sink at the bow like Titanic, and see if she breaks in half with her whole stern rising out of the water. James Cameron could do a modern epic ocean liner sinking drama. Rather than just sink her in shallow waters, take her way out into the deep sea and film her sinking for real. I wonder if she would break in half like Titanic? Perhaps she is too well built? Combined with explosions and the ship breaking in half...wow, what a sight to see. But then again, it would be horribly sad for us ocean liner buffs and for those who have such a connection to the NORWAY / FRANCE.

How 'bout John Goodman as the chief engineer, or Charlie Sheen.

Rex, I'd rather the house fall on Anita Bryant

What about Pamela Anderson in the Dorothy Malone part? Her chest could keep her afloat as the cabin fills with water.....oh the drama!! As the water covered her face, all that would remain above would be her large boobs.

EEK! The director could put a little red wig on her and 60s style skirts and she could skip around the ship with a big lollipop. Very scary.

I noticed that in the orgional movie, I observed an incredible amount of veneer and hanging drapes. All that flammable stuff makes this old firefighter cringe. The fire regulations have certainly changed.

The lacquered veneers would be the biggest problem in a fire I would guess. Newbuilds also have the drapes (look at QM2) but the 'veneers' are actually plastic type laminates. Of course you could go the other extreme and have the fireproof look of SSUS which is quite cold IMO. With a good fire sprinkler system in place, what would be the problem with some flammable materials?

In most cases it is not the fire that kills people but the smoke. So already harmless looking small fires can be really dangerouse, especially in "confined" spaces. A Sprinkler system is of course also very important, but avoiding certain materials (like PVC) and an efficient ventilation system is crucial.
