Franca C had Verandah bar and outdoor pool on Sun deck, Feste Saloon, Soggiorno saloon and cabins on Lounge deck, Pranzo dining saloon and cabins on Promenade deck and lower cabins on Upper, "A" and "B" deck.

Last year I had a tour on the Doulos (ex Franca C) practically noting is left from her Costa days. Here is a link to a little article I wrote about the ship. Doulos/ex Franca C

What a difference, I believe the Costa picture is looking aft and mine is looking to the front of the ship. The deck heads (especially in the restaurant) were extremely low, I have an average height but there was only about 10 cm extra space above my head. If you have a “funny” walk you bump your head each time. It was actually nice to see the sheer of the ship, if you placed a ball in restaurant it would automatically roll towards the middle of the ship.

Sorry Onno,
when I visited the ship in Bremen in 2004 I visited a cabin, a former passenger cabin, that seemed unchanged (and unrepaired) since the last passenger left it in 1977.

Hi Michael,

I had a quick look inside a cabin as well and indeed it did not look much had been updated from the 70’s onwards. For a cruise ship unacceptable but for the Doulos it doesn’t matter so much. Probably the cabins are the only unchanged parts from the Costa days, the public rooms have been stripped and utilized all for the book selling mission.

Did you visit the spare book storage inside the hull, I loved the way you could see both curved hull sides.

Never the less I loved the ship and the people working on her cared a lot about her as well.

I spent some weeks on the ship back in 1994 and she still had a lot of her old Costa decor, although much was actually being stripped out at the time to bring the ship up to the latest SOLAS regs. I have to say her Costa decor wasn't too flash at all but streets ahead of the blank and bland that has replaced it, but then she is run by a vollunteer organisation that cannot afford to waste a cent making her beautiful. That she is still sailing is a miracle in itself.
