No pics, but a group of us saw her off departing L.A. late monday night. She was suppose to depart at 10:00pm and actually departed at 11:00pm. She only blew her whistle once at the pier and not the normal 3 long blasts while passing through the channel out to sea. She looked great as usual being escorted out by Coast Guard and a helicopter complete with a spot light. Several people associated with the Maritime Matters site were taking photographs and talking about her future. Some said she was beginning to have mechanical issues and may last until Queen Victoria enters service in a couple of years. Of course, I did not want to hear any of this and I now want to book another trip on her before she is retired. I have many fond memories of our crossings and cruises on her. 2006 might be her last World Cruise-I hope not.
She probably still looks like this:
Are you expecting her to look different?

She does have that “ski box” shaped air-co unit in front of her funnel.
Can you get those $2 jobbies moved onto the fast track and have your flat of coke ready to go for 2006!
That's all I ask of you....

Great photo of her at anchor. Any idea where it was taken? The tenders are deployed, so a port with no docking facilities.
quote:Originally posted by Mr_Cunard:Talking about tenders i heard that the 2 tenders that were attached later in QE2's life and then removed they apparentley had nick names any idear what they were?
Two tenders were placed far aft on boat deck just behind the shops and fitted in 1983 when the Lido deck(aka Quater deck) was reconstructed for covering Lido pool with rectable Magrodome.
The Magrodome, Quater deck pool and two tenders were removed in 1994 when the Club Lido converted to expanded Lido restaurant.
They were called as Alpha and Beta.

Thank goodness they were removed (along with the Magradome). That entire addition ruined the look of the aft tiered decks. Another example of a refit ruining what was originally a beautiful clean design. The partial restoration of the lidos (minus the one pool) enhanced but did not completely restore what was once there.

Actually it was the "Club Lido" on Quarter Deck. There was also the One Deck Lido.
Alpha and Beta were added during the late 1983 refit but the davits for Alpha and Beta were installed earlier in the year at Southampton between voyages. The starboard side davits were installed on September 26 and the port side davits were added on October 8.
Alpha and Beta were terrible tenders that bounced around in the water like corks. The lifeboat/launches that were/are used as tenders ride the water much more smoothly. Cunard should have gotten rid of them sooner.

The Club Lido was former Q4 room on Quarter deck.
The Q4 room was designed by David Hicks and was used as Nightclub until construction for Helipad in 1982.The new Club Lido was installed at the reconstruction of the post Falkland war.

Are you sure? Why these davits were installed before reconstruction at Bremerhaven?
I assumed that QE2 was sailed from Southampton on October 8, 1983.

Yes and No. The indoor portion of the Club Lido was built in the space formerly occupied by the Q4 Hideaway as part of the post-Falklands refit in July-August 1982. However it extended a little further aft than the Q4 had. When the Magradome was added in the late 1983 refit, the space under the dome became part of the Club Lido.
Are you sure?
Yes. I was aboard QE2 from September 20 to October 13 in 1983.
Why these davits were installed before reconstruction at Bremerhaven?
I have no idea why this was done so far in advance, but the empty davits looked strange, especially on the 12-day Mediterranean cruise (Sept 26 to Oct 8) when only the starboard davits were present.
Yes. QE2 arrived in Southampton from Lisbon on the morning of October 8 and sailed for New York that evening. Due to boiler problems she arrived in New York 9 hours late on October 13... it was 7 pm before passengers could disembark.

Two tenders were installed onto newly extended boat deck. If the starboard side davits were installed on September 26, Did QE2 extended/raised boat deck in the same day?The space were covered by Window screens just behind the Double Down Bar on Upper deck, later altered to Yacht club at December 1983 refit.
If Cunard carried these reconstruction between Trans Alantic sailing and Europe cruise.
I'm very curious to know the Itinerary.
The photo shown the double down bar with full length windows aft on Upper deck and the window screens were fitted in pebble gray days in 1983.
The photo clearly shown Two tenders were fitted on new extended boat deck and new extended Upper deck just above the rectable Magrodome.

Are you implying the install of the port side davits were added at QE2 Terminal?
quote:Originally posted by Ocean Liners:Are you implying the install of the port side davits were added at QE2 Terminal?
I am not implying anything. I am just stating when the davits were installed and the dates are accurate. I was ashore all day on both September 26 and October 8, so I cannot say for sure whether or not QE2 was moved from the QE II Terminal for the installations.
While your observations about the "extended" boat deck after the Bremerhaven refit are correct, the support columns etc. for the davits extended down to the upper deck. The "extension" was not added/completed until Bremerhaven.
As for QE2's exact itinerary between Sept 20 and Oct 13, 1983 it is as follows:
Sep 20: Dep New YorkSep 25: Arr Southampton (1 hour late)Sep 26: Dep Southampton (evening)Sep 29: Ibiza (maiden call)Sep 30: BarcelonaOct 01: Ajaccio (maiden call)Oct 02: NaplesOct 03: Palermo (maiden call)Oct 05: Gibraltar (docked 1 hour late)Oct 06: LisbonOct 08: Arr/Dep Southampton Oct 13: Arr New York (Late arrival at 5 pm)
Note: There was no call at Cherbourg on either of the transatlantic voyages.

Actually those full length windows are not in the Double Down Bar. There was a promenade/passage between the Double Down bar and those windows. The windows in the DDB were not full length.

I thought a few Cruise Passengers were stayed on board on Sep. 25/6 and Oct. 8.
Accrording to QE2 timetable, QE2 Embarkation time from 4pm to 6pm on Oct. 8.I don't believe the works done in a few hours at Southampton because She had an ample time in Bremerhaven, QE2 arrived Bremerhaven on Nov. 28, 1983 and was scheduled to resume Trans Atlantic sailing from Southampton on Dec. 16.
Do you have the davits photo?

I was there. I saw the davits on the dates I have quoted. I guarantee they are accurate. All you have are some brochures and pictures which you have blindly misinterpreted. Believe what you want, but you will still be wrong. You are such a pain in the butt. End of discussion.

QE2 had done to slice the aft of the Club Lido, When the Slice lift up by crane, An ample space cut needed on Upper deck in order to Lift up. I saw the photo shown one starboard davit only attached by the end of Sports deck when the Magrodome was lifted.
Please see your QE2 Books page 135. but the book didn't mention the date when the photo was taken(I remain)
I was just wondered why the aft starboard davit was installed at Southernpton?
However you wanted the End of discussion!
Does anyone knows?
