In 1929 G.L. Watson & Co. was commissioned by the heiress Lady Yule to design a steam yacht that would permit her to "visit every part of the globe she desired". Following in a line of acknowledged classics we produced a design which was at the pinnacle of the evolution of clipper bow and counter stern steam yachts. Clyde-built by John Brown & Co., Nahlin's elegance was acclaimed in her day and, with her survival to the 21st century, she remains the ultimate classic power-yacht.

Nice looking yacht. Wonder if anyone will purchase her though to complete restoration. She doesn't seem to have actually sailed much during her 'career'?

Pam,
I sent a friend of mine to photograph her at Liverpool, but she is guarded like gold!
Her most infamous passenger was King Edward VIII, as he romanced Wallis Simpson!

Power & Motoryacht state "The restoration of this historic lady, one of the last large steam yachts built in the UK, is now complete. The refit is rumored to have cost $35 million, with a lot of labor centered on removing asbestos, restoring her masts (strictly for cosmetic purposes), and repairing her engines" [seems to be dated 2003]. So perhaps she has been finished off & ready to sail wherever?

Do you have any news about the fate of Nahlin ?? I know the ship since i was a kid , it was docked on Danube river till the corruption in Romania resulted the sale of the ship. The ship was classified as national cultural treasure and in order to sell it they declassify it , now a entire city is pissed on the guys that sold it . Between 1972 till 2002 was docked in Galati and was the city icon .

I remember reading about the Nahlin cruise with King Edward VIII and Wallis Warfield Simpson. Mrs. Simpson's Aunt Bessie from Baltimore accompanied her on the cruise. Mrs. Simpson was one of a few persons to become more attractive with age. Hubert de Givenchy may have had a small part in that too.

She came back to the UK on a heavy lift ship. After some time in Devonport she moved to Liverpool. She left there on 28 July 2005 with another piggyback for restoration in Germany - a series of photos of her departure are here.

She was at the Nobiskrug shipyard in Rendsberg on the Kiel-Canal, see here for photo, until 26 March 2008 when she was towed to Blohm & Voss. Pictures of the tow here. Blohm & Voss just list her as being there for 'modifications'.

There are a number of photos of her in Hamburg at B&V in May last year about the net, one here, where progress seems to have been made, but I can't find anything more current. She is listed as 'dead' on Equasis, but her owner's detail there is out of date too I think?
