As was pointed out in another thread a few months ago, motor ships normally don't burn diesel. They use IFO 380 or Bunker C. For example, QE2's diesels burn the same type of oil that was used to fire her boilers in her steam days. So, has the price of of IFO380 gone up, down or remained relatively stable?
Brian
Normally I would pose this question in the technical section, but as it is following a thread, I shall place it here. I always thought that "marine diesel" was more of a cousin to automotive diesel and locomotive diesel fuel. I am familiar with the latter, and railroad fuel-handlihg equipment. With the latest large diesel locomotives approaching the 9000hp range, their size is approaching that of some marine power plants.
I believed that Bunker C is very heavy and tar-like, and was only suitable as a marine combustion fuel. How, then, is it made less viscous, so it will flow, and will be capable of being "Squirted" into the fuel injectors of diesel engines?
If heat is required to enhance liquid flow, the engines would have to be running first in order to generate the pre-inection heat. Or am I way off in this hypothesis?

Petrol, as we call it here, is being sold from $AUD0.98 cents to $AUD1.08 per litre (liter). A litre is:
1.000 litre = 0.26417 US gallon
1 US gallon = 0.8327 UK gallon = 3.7854 litres
Today's mid rate at 2004.05.27 04:03:50 GMT. :
$USD1.00 = $AUD1.40807$AUD1.00 = $USD0.71019
**************************************************
Petrol has gone up between $AUD0.10 and $AUD0.15 cents a litre. Diesel hasn't really gone up, it's somewhere in the mid $AUD0.90s. LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) is about $AUD0.35 to $AUD0.38 cents a litre and hasn't gone up.
Cheers

You are correct in assuming that they need to heat the oil first. I had always assumed that they used diesel until that earlier thread here on CT (I think it was in a thread on Norway and whether or not she should be re-engined with diesels a la QE2). Since then I have seen some technical info concerning both QE2 and QM2 but I cannot remember exactly where.
Perhaps the CTer who informed us about IFO 380 (was it Feargus?) could shed more light on it.
I'm not even sure how much we pay a litre/gallon noe; I don't even bother to look, I just fill her up and pay the £15 - £20.
So what do we pay, here? Anyone?
I assume you use diesel, Malcolm...
J.
Still the roads are as congested as ever, with these prices (so even in USA and Down Under there is some room for price hikes )

quote:Originally posted by steeplechase:I believe that Europe drivers have alot more taxes included in each liter of "Petro" If fuel went up 15-20 cent a liter in Assie then I guess that would be in line with our 50 cent a gallon jump here.
Here in exurbia, paid 2.18 USD a gallon for unleaded premium. Diesel is running about 1.75 per gallon. Can't understand why diesel is so much cheaper? Perhaps it has to do with less refining of diesel, or more additives to gasoline, or relative taxation?? Just don't know.
Apologies, for being off "cruise travel" topics.

QE2's usage of IFO 380 is outlined in THIS THREAD .
The information originates in a "From the Desk of The Chief Engineer" information sheet given to passengers on QE2 that is posted on Sam Warwick's QE2 web site.
