Welcome aboard, Dan!

You might start by telling us your favorite of your five cruises, and why.

Hi and thankyou

I liked all my trips so far , but i guess my personel favorite would have to be the Achille Lauro. I will never forget laying on a deck chair on the stern area and looking up and seeing both the funnels spewing out there exhaust .The ship was travelling at high speed ,and I could really sense the power of the engines turing those 2 screws. It was a sad note to see her on fire and sunk just 18 months after my trip.

Hi Dan, this comes from one of my galleries here on CT. It's from a brochure from the late 80's.

Thanks scottQE2...........I love those sort of pictures to keep.Another thing i will always remember is that i had a outside cabin and it was a 4 berth. The thing that was different about this cabin was it had a porthole in the bathroom as well.So all together there were 3 portholes in the cabin with 2 in the bedroom area.My cabin, and the one on the opp side of the ship also had the 3 portholes. It was the only 2 alike on the whole ship.

hi linerdan-

i also went on the Achille Lauro back in 1990- i was only young at the time but remember sharing a cabin with my family and my grandparents. It must of been an interconnecting one... all i remember was it was an odd shape with 6 beds!! oh it too was an outside cabin... do you (or anyone else) have deck plans? look up V 77!

(the only reason i know the number is because we have a laugage tag up on the wall with some photos!)

Hi Dan, welcome at Cruise Talk.

I think you will like it here, many of us have a weak for the classic ships. Since Achille Lauro is the subject I thought I post a drawing from her early days as the Willem Ruys.

Best, Onno

My uncle and aunt sailed aboard her just before her sinking.

When did the Achilli Laro Sink? When was the last time Southern Cross was called the Southern Cross? Does anybody else suspect anything? He has been on all of the classics?

Lets see Oceanbreeze left for SouthHampton in 1972...
Never to become Southernbreeze again?
That was 32 years ago
And he is how old?

Hi steeplechase...........The "Southern Cross" i went on was owned at the time by CTC cruises. It was the (ex Starship Majestic , ex Spirit of London) to the best of my knowledge she is now sailing as the "Flamenco"?.
The Achille Lauro sank on the 2nd of Dec 1994.I cruised her in 1992.Hope this clears up any issues.Dan

I was just wondering how that time line panned out as I knew Oceanbreeze had not been Southern Cross in sometime. And that you have sailed so many "Classics"

LinerDan

I have been following these boards for awhile - but your interest in the Achille Lauro caught my attention and I decided to post. I have an excellent magazine and some newspaper articles on the fire. They are written in Italian however... Having been to Australia twice, I know that there are alot of Italo/Australians - if you happen to read/understand Italiabn. I will be happy to send you a copy.

I also have several excellent brochures picked up in Italy during the early 90's and a brochure written in English advertising a Round Africa trip. Let me know if you want any of the above.

Also, I noticed that you are from Jervis Bay - is there not a beach there called Hyam's or something like that? I was there in 2000, and I remember it having the whitest sand I had ever seen.

Cheers, and please go and eat a TimTam (or a package of them) on my behalf.

Robert

Gday Robert and thanks for your offer.I here have many clippings and booklets on the Achille Lauro so im ok in that dept.Maybe if you wanted to pass them on you could try "EBay"? , there maybe a buyer out there for those things. In regards to the sand , yes you are right. It is noted for the whiteist sand in the world. How and why this happened here i dont know....lol.But its nice and soft under the feet on a hot day.
Ok you twisted my arm , i will eat a Tim tam (or 12) and i will eat one on your behalf
Regards Dan

I could never sell my brochures - I have been collecting them since I was a child. Maybe twenty or thirty years from now though.

Do you get to the Maritime Museum in Sydney at all? I loved their collection of books, postcards, etc. One of the best liner books I have (purchased at the museum) is called "Emigrant Ship to Luxury Liner". It is an excellent resource rgarding Australian shipping. If you do not have it, I recommend you search it out. Cheers!
