May I warn American ship lovers that ssUS dream should not distract them from the fate of a serving cruise liner.
ssEmerald did not get a beauty award when New-Yorker Lelakis had her rebuilt for Regency Cruises in 1989.
But, that beautiful hull still steams gracefully so to spaek, albeit not for many more years to come...
I hope to take some nice pictures of her, from the stern especially..or omitting the ugly forward superstructures.
In the distance, this ship is a little ssUS...
Even at full speed, no significant bow wake....
And she is the last US steamer to operate commercially...
Anyone has close up pictures that gives her credit?

Aren't the MONTEREY and the UNIVERSE EXPLORER still sailing?

Hi Marlowe,

Yes both the Monterey and the Universe Explorer are sailing. However, Maritime Matters has indicated that the Monterey may be retired at the end of it's European season and ssMaritime has added Universe Explorer to it's "Save a Classic Liner" campaign because they believe she will be retired this year.

I am so sorry not to have better news. God willing at least some of these three ships (Emerald, Monterey and Universe Explorer) will find new owners.

Sorry, I forgot about the Monterey..
But Universe Explorer is only sold to Student I think....
IMHO, ssEmerald is the best of the lot because she was designed by Gibbs of ssUS fame.
Monterey was a converted C3 cargo reconverted again to luxury cruise ship.

Out of the three I can see The Emerald sailing well into the future, as she was completley rebuilt into the Regent Rainbow for Regency Cruises in 1994 I believe and cost a good 75 million or so. I think for someone to buy her and re-engine her to Diesels they would be making a very good investment!! As I dont think she will have too big a problem passing the Solas 2010! The Universe Explorer is a very sound ship and I think she is Under Charter to The University Semester at Sea Program til 2007 or around their, so I think she will be sailing for a while longer! She seems to be a very good ship for her current purpose!

UNIVERSE EXPLORER's days are most likely numbered, as the organisation that runs has bought the OLYMPIA EXPLORER...

The Olympia Explorer has been bought by Semester at Sea???? This would be a definite interesting development if true! If the post is right that Universe Explorer will be replaced with the Olympia Explorer, well then it must be a Charter, cause I dont see Institiute for Shipboard Education having the $$ to buy her?? Anyone know any other info on this??
