Barryboat was nice enough to submit a very detailed report on his January QM2 cruise. Thanks Barry.

Thanks Joe!

I know it's a bit long, but I think I wrote most of what I wanted to say about our experience on QM2. There was so little time during the two-night cruise to nowhere and so much that I wanted to do. If I had more time, I can think of many other things that I would have liked to do.

I hope you all enjoy the review.

Any comments about this article would be helpful, cause the article is being considered for a magazine.

Barryboat--Really enjoyed the article, and am sending a copy (with your permission?) to my sister/brother-in-law in the U.K. who have booked passage on the QM2 for this September.

Don't know how you had time to see/do as much as you did and still write up this review? Must have been using a voice recorder as you "toured" the ship?

thanx!

Maybe it's me but, too much fluff in my book.
The converger in me just wants the facts without the filler.

I also think that mentioning your credentials once, at the beginning, is more than enough.

And I'm wondering, what school does one attend to become a Queen Mary Historian?

Russ - I agree - you are a voice of reason. I am sailing on her on May 1 - will let you know the facts when I get home.

Russ, I'll have to review what I have written to see if I have referred to my "credentials" one too many times...thanks for the heads-up. The magazine that I am writting for wants "fluff", details. Readers want to feel like they were there...so I included some dramatic flare. Wouldn't it be a boring read if it were just the facts?

To defend myself as a Queen Mary historian...it's easier to say than...I have studied the Queen Mary's history, read nearly every book, collected many artifacts, written many articles, and studied the ship's technical details for nearly 30 years. I also have a book about the Queen Mary with a transition to the QM2, coming soon to a bookstore near you. People relate better to when I say I'm a QM historian.

Colt, absolutely go ahead and send a copy of the article to your sister/brother-in-law.

Barry,

No problem at all. You asked for comments and I was happy to oblige.

Everyone's style of writing is different. Personally, I can do without knowing every last detail.....but that's just me. Don't get me wrong: Your review is appreciated and it's monumental undertaking is understood; and kudos to Joe for bringing it to our attention. It's just that I grew tired about a quarter of the way through....simply from overload.

As far as being a QM historian: If loving a subject, writing articles, and collecting memorabilia makes one a bona fide historian, then I relish in the fact that, here on these boards, I am in good company.

Russ

Barryboat - don't say flare when you mean flair. Or say dinning room ever.

Mec1

Look it up in the dictionary, "flare" is acceptable as I used it. As for dinning, It's a typo that happens way too often and the spell check doesn't catch it. Sorry you're offended.

I wouldn't normally do this, but as you're asking for "editorial" comments ...

I'm really not sure you do mean "flare". You mean "flair", as in definition 3 of:-

quote:
1. A natural talent or aptitude; a knack: a flair for interior decorating].
2. Instinctive discernment; keenness: a flair for the exotica.
3. Distinctive elegance or style: served us with flair.
None of the following definitions of "flare" really capture what you intended:-
quote:
1. A brief wavering blaze of light.
2. A device that produces a bright light for signaling, illumination, or identification.
3. An outbreak, as of emotion or activity.
4. An expanding or opening outward.
5. An unwanted reflection within an optical system or the resultant fogging of the image.
6. A solar flare.
7. a. Football A short pass to a back running toward the sideline.
7. b. Baseball A fly ball hit a short distance into the outfield.
8. Medicine An area of redness on the skin surrounding the primary site of infection or irritation.

But this is relative nit picking within a good read - thank you for taking the time to share it with us.

Globaliser,

I know the definition of "flair", but I intentionally selected "flare".

3. An outbreak, as of emotion or activity.
4. An expanding or opening outward.

Thanks for the definitions though. I had hoped it would be a good read for some people.

I was going to collect a bunch of things from QM2 to giveaway at Cruise Talk, but I ran out of space in our luggage...you should have seen our bags, as they were bulging from the camera gear, video equipment, and the Maxtone-Graham book that was given away.

Thanks all for the comments!

Barryboat

If you seriously are trying to defend your use of flare as opposed to flair, I suggest you stop writing. Oh, yes, and if you are remotely interested in actually writing what you mean, try reading "Eats, Shoots and Leaves". It's a gigantic best-seller about precise expression.

Don't reply to this - I shall be busy in the dinning room.

Mec1,

All I have to say is "whatever"!

I don't deserve your criticism. I don't know why there are the few people on this board that seem to think it is their mission to slam and belittle everything I say...almost looks like desirod has put a little gang together of Barryboat haters.

Flair / flare...who cares...get a life.

Barry: While I agree entirely with your comments concerning mec1's posts, which border on childish, don't you think the above statement is just a little far-fetched?

BTW, thanks for posting your review. Nice job.

Yes! Green cheese washed down with too much sour grapes.
