Also, someone wrote in to USA today that the media is not mentioning that it was a French ship yard, Chantiers de l'Atlantique that built the ship...they say all the credit goes to Cunard. It's like an article about a great new car that credits the man who bought it.

And as for the other part, the contract could have just as easily gone to Harland & Wolff. Stephen Payne is not an employee of the French shipyard. Sure they built her, but they wouldn't have had anything to do with it if it wasn't for Carnival/ Cunard. And I still hear the media referring to the"French Built QM2".
If someone doesn't like her, you're not going to change their mind & visa versa. But when a person has an educated point of view, such as I read from time to time on this page, it's thought provoking. But what you've quoted from Westover is just striking out - and the only conclusion I can draw is because his favorite ship (as beautiful as it ONCE was) is going nowhere and almost a billion dollars was spent on QM2. Sour Grapes?
quote:Originally posted by Baazzerboat:Robert Westover writes, in today's USA Today that the QM2 is a "post-modern-hybrid cruiseship / ocean liner that is a pokey tugboat compared with our nation's flagship the legendary ocean liner ss United States."
Sour grapes! Someone ought to inform Mr. Westover that his beloved SS United States saw a mere 17 years of service before being laid up. It has not seen any service since 1969 despite numerous futile attempts to revive her since 1978. SS United States is a economic dinosaur that should have gone the way of the dinosaur years ago.

If Mr. Westover makes comments like that all the time, I am not surprised that his efforts to save her have not worked.
Calling QM2 a "pokey tugboat" compared to ANYTHING is simply ridiculous. His personal preference may be for UNITED STATES but that doesn't mean he has to put down everything else out there.
I say the man's just jealous that "his" ship isn't getting all the attention. Sour grapes indeed.
As for the bit about the builders not getting enough recognition, it is probably true... BUT it is not comparable to crediting a great new car to its owner unless the owner also happens to have designed it, overseen construction, etc.!
