A sad day today. I noticed first that Albatros was leaving Genoa and posted a note "could she be going to Alang".
A few hours later Maritime Matters confirmed this.

Next year we will probably see more 1950's and 60's ships going over there including my favorite ship Monterey

What is she going to Alang without ?

Anyhow it is very sad to see this happened... I somehow expected that she would be the last of these four sisters to survive but in fact her older sisters FEDOR SHALYAPIN and CHINA SEA DISCOVERY will apparently outlive her, though ALBATROS may still wind up being the last SAXONIA-class ship to actually be in active service as both of those are presently laid-up with little or no prospects for the future.

Bad news... I hoped the ship could be saved.

I sa the ship in Amsterdam in August 2003, a very nice ship... and I visited her in 1993 before she started her first cruise for Phoenix.

I hope the ship can be saved... but how? 2003 was a bad years for ship lovers... and I have big doubts, if NORWAY, UNITED STATES, MONTEREY and a lot of other ships will have a better future...

Let's hope her webcam stays on until the end!
Who knows, we might catch a glimpse of the other classics?

ssLewis,

Now that would be a real horror movie!

Has there ever been a similar time where such a bunch of classics all went to the scrape yards in such a short period? Like Karsten, I’m lucky I had seen her in august of this year.

Best, Onno

From MaritimeMatters:
quote:
The Call Of Alang:
December 21: Joining the throng of vessels at or enroute to Alang, it was announced today that ALBATROS, the 1957-built former SYLVANIA, FAIRWIND, DAWN PRINCESS has departed Genoa after an inspection revealed necessary repairs to her machinery would be too costly. Her forthcoming world cruise for German-based Phoenix Seereisen was cancelled earlier this month. Under the name GENOA, she departed for Suez and Alang.

Also enroute is the MAYAN EMPRESS, the 1967-built former WINSTON CHURCHILL, which departed Olen, Norway after years of layup on December 19.

The 1957-built SEA HARMONY, former STATENDAM, RHAPSODY, REGENT STAR, which has been lying at Eleusis, Greece since the collapse of Regency Cruises in late 1995, has also reportedly been sold for scrap.

The ship passes the Suez Canal 26.12.03 as "GENOA".

Nationality: "GEO".... ?!? Georgia?!? Could be a mistake, but surprising...

This site

says that ALBATOS is scheduled to arrive at Alang 04.01.04. Sale is possible for 6.000.000 USD.

"NOVEMBER INSPECTION SHOWED HER TO BE IN EXTREMELY GOOD CONDITION"

So why Alang???

Phoenix Reisen will announce the "new" ALBATROS 09.01.04.

Karsten.....Keitaro quoted from Maritime Matters - 2 above -
Machinery repairs required were considered too costly.

As has also been mentioned, after the Norway's boiler explosion the cost of insurance on ALL the old steamships has probably skyrocketed.

As I keep saying a coat of paint may make her look good to the average pax, BUT it's what's inside that you can't see that is the problem - piping, wiring, bulkheads, decks and machinery you cannot get parts for any longer and that have to be made at high cost.
