According to their website, Greenpeace have put the following cruise ships on their list of ships most likely to be sent to the breakers.

Rembrandt
Norway
Pacific Princess ( renamed Pacific)
Stena Seatrader
Rhapsody

Thoughts?

Anything that greenpeace does like that is aimed solely at publicity and not based on any facts.

I wouldn't put much stock in that list, not only because I wouldn't put much stock in what Greenpeace says but also because their choices make no sense at all.

NORWAY I could see going to the breakers soon, but not the others.

REMBRANDT will be preserved, or at least she'll die trying.

PACIFIC and RHAPSODY seem too new, and the former isn't even for sale.

My personal list of most likely cruise ships to go to the breakers would have to be (in no particular order):
AUSONIA
PRINCESA VICTORIA
WORLD RENAISSANCE
ODYSSEUS
MONTEREY
ALBATROS
NORWAY

Actually what the site says is this:

"50 ships in the spotlight

Greenpeace has selected 50 ships which *might be* scrapped soon. We have asked the owners of these ships to declare that their ships will be decontaminated before scrapping at Asian countries. Until that time Greenpeace will follow and monitor these (and other) ships."

THATS ALL IT SAYS

Still an odd choice of ships if you ask me.

I'd agree with you on CHINA SEA DISCOVERY, seems a matter of time before that one bites the dust.

OCEAN EXPLORER I has at least until the 2004 Athens Olympics are finished as I believe she is being used as an accomodation ship.

REGENT STAR may be past scrapping, in that I don't know if she's in good enough condition to be towed anywhere.

I'm not sure about MONA LISA, I discounted her just because she's in service. How well she's doing I don't know.

they should also add the few hundred single hulled tankers floating around, oh i forgot they aren't love boats etc so no one cares.
before anyone gets excited 'a few hundred' might be pushing it a bit.

... and I can see in another few years all the double hulled tankers...
What are your thoughts on the double hull?
I have read many articles over the years, of which some have been quite scathing of the design and seem to be pointing a finger at the USCG being selfish and only considering themselves, as although the double hull is excellent for zero discharge in groundings, squats, scrapes etc [which is the liklehood in US waters], when it comes to a high impact collision the risk of explosion & instability appears to be far greater than that of a single hulled tanker? as part evidenced off Yemen last year.
There was another design, which I thought better being considered, but the USCG didn't want to know.. Columbus Egg?? some similar name, what happened to that?
Perhaps this should be another thread...

Is it possible that the very high number of cruise ships going to the brekers in this period is due to the fact that Greenpeace started interesting to the matter and that the people involved in the business are afraid of some sort of international campaign against it?

cruiseny, the MONA LISA is under Charter for
Holiday Kreuzfahrten in Germany until 2010.

In the Edition of AN BORD, that is our German
Special Magacine for Shiplovers and Cruisegoers,
Edition No 6/2003, that is December 2003/January 2004, the newest available, she got good Comments from Cruisegoers, in the Edition No. 5/2003, 2 Months before, there was an big Article
including Pictures and it was good, too.

Friendly Service, vcery good Food by German Chief Cook Stefan Albrecht, Ambiance of an classic Liner, plenty of Space, excellent clean and maintained, very stable at Sea, moderate Prices for Drinks and other Things to pay on your own,
good Deck Space.

Not so good: Excursions expensive, in the Evening no Dining at Lido Buffet, very early leaving of your Cabin at the last Day of the Cruise, this could be done better.

The Advantages of Course are much bigger than the Disadvantages.

And: The Company offers very often good Prices.
The sell exclusiv under Holiday Kreuzfahrten Germany, no Travel Agents, no Resellers,
so: NO PROVISION FOR OTHERS!

At which point she (and quite a few other ships) will be forced to go to the breakers.

So unless they break the charter or she has some kind of unforseen problem, she shouldn't be on any lists to be scrapped.

Got an email from Willem H. van der Leek:

quote:
Moving onto another ship, it would appear that the old Statendam, now
derelict at a forgotten anchorage in Perama under the name Sea
Harmony, has been sold for scrap at $208 per ldt, which means $3.44
million for the ship. A good price - I just hope she can survive the
tow to India.

Met vriendelijke groeten / with kind regards,

Willem H. van der Leek

Steeplechase - this is STATENDAM (IV), built in 1957 for HAL. She became RHAPSODY for Paquet in 1982, and then REGENT STAR in 1987 for Regency. She has been laid-up at Eleusis since they went bankrupt in 1995. She is reported to be in extremely poor condition and many people I've spoken to who have seen her recently have doubts as to whether she'll be able to make it to India without sinking.

Here is a photo of Aris' in the galleries taken earlier this year. If can get a copy of Ships Monthly's latest issue there is a good close-up of her.
