Oceanliners,
my fav til the P&O treatment.
A perfect blend of robust scottish build and Swedish craftmanship.
She is really the last two funnel ship ever built isn't she?
I bet Ian Schiffman would love to rebuild the funnel.
As Mona Lisa, she is still around, lets hope she get a better livery.

Yeah, so to speak, Disney had two funnels..But I was thinking of proper worldwide liner..not Caribbean cruise ship...
In fact, all SAL ships had a fake forward funnel!
But will never forgive P&O nor Hapag Lloyd for emasculating such a beautiful ship.
Just wished Design flwas could be sued in a specialiosed High Court for Crime against beauty! Sentence should be unilaterally voted : rebuild the wonderful ship as it was!
How come they left the poor ship like that all these years is beyond comprehension.
Even Olympia of 1953, noe Regal Empress had many funnels jobs after re-engineering until she got right!

What exactly was Hapag-Lloyd's place in that aesthetic atrocity?

One seasoned traveller and liner nut told me... There are some ships he loves, and some ships he loves bits and pieces of. SEA PRINCESS/VICTORIA, he said, was one of the latter.

Unfortunately her external profile is just terrible, with that awful stump where the dummy funnel used to be, the badly-proportioned, elongated present one, and then the worst of all, the truly horrible aft superstructure. Few things so spectacularly beautiful have been so easily made spectacularly ugly (and from some angles, this ship IS ugly, even if she's still gorgeous from others).

But to me, this ship, along with her 1953 predecessor and GRIPSHOLM, BERGENSFJORD, SAGAFJORD, VISTAFJORD and a few Swedish and Danish ferries of the era, will always symbolise the height of Scandinavian style and quality at sea. From the drawing boards of Scandinavian designers in the 1950s and 1960s came some of the most wonderful ships the world has ever seen and it is very sad that only a few are left today.

I think there might be some confusion as to which Kungsholm some folks are talking about. sslewis mentions not forgiving "P&O nor Hapag Lloyd for emasculating such a beautiful ship". Actually, the ship that became Sea Princess and Victoria was originally Kungsholm IV and never owned by Hapag Lloyd; Kungsholm III is the ship that went to the Germans.

Kungsholm III belong to Norddeutscher Lloyd starting in 1965; she didn't become part of Hapag Lloyd until 1970 and was then bought by Costa in 1981 when she became Columbus C.

As far as structural changes are concerned, neither NDL, Hapag-Lloyd or Costa did anything to the ship. NDL painted her funnels mustard yellow and her hull black, Hapag added their logo, and in 1972, painted her hull white. Costa repainted her funnels "Costa Yellow" and that was it.

Just thought I'd clear that up. Oh, one last thing: I agree with cruiseny,...once P&O took over Kungsholm IV, they pretty much ruined her profile.

Kungsholm of 1952 was visited to Yokohama in every springs from 1955 to 1965 except in 1957.(SAL cancelled on thier 1957 RTW cruise)
Since 1967, Kungsholm of 1965 became a regular caller on her round the world cruises or circle pacific cruises until 1976.
But Gripsholm replaced that place only in 1966
In 1973 and 1974 Kungsholm and Gripsholm were docked at yokohama to meet here.

When Flagshship cruises' Kungsholm was acquired by P&O, Sea Princess underwent a major refit at Bremerhaven. Her fore funnel was shortened(I believe).

Promenade deck/Aft Sports room were removed and New Carousel room and Outdoor pool were added .
On Verandah deck, Verandah Lounge, Aft Cooktail Lounge, Aft Smoking Room and Enclosed Promenade deck were removed in behalf of New additional 47 outside cabins and 26 inside cabins were installed.

Kungsholm (3) 1953, Gripsholm (2) 1957, Kungsholm (4) 1966 where almost sister ships. They where very simmulair. Its striking to see how a ship design is ussed fore other ships. Here pictures frome all ships.

Kungsholm (3) 1953.

Gripsholm (2) 1957.

Kungsholm (4) 1966.

Ben,

Gripsholm had all outside cabins and Public rooms were located on one deck only though Kungsholm had Inside cabins and Public were located two decks and their layout were not identical.

I was on the last cruise of the Kungsholm ['66] in
Aug 1978. She was then owned by Flagship
Cruises. It was a Bermuda/Eastern Canada cruise
out of NYC for 14 days. She was in neglected
shape and the crew in low spirits. We knew from
the moment we got on that it was the last cruise.
It was not told to us before hand. P&O reps were
on board making inspections and plans. The ship
left for Germany after our cruise for that really
terrible transformation.
BTW, the Kungsholm ['53] also had all outside
staterooms. Some of the shapes were odd and
long hallways often led to a single porthole at the end. I don't think NDL did too much to her when they bought her. She was in fine shape.
The Kungsholm of '66 had to be one of the true
beauties of all time.

Kungsholm sold to Flagship Cruises in 1975 and visited to Kagoshima(3/24) and Yokohama(3/26) on her 1976 South Seas the Far East & the Pacific Cruise.

She was sold to P&O in 1978.

Though the two ships had a similar look, Kungsholm of 1953 did not have a proper boat deck when compared to her fleetmate Gripsholm of 1957. The Gripsholm's boats were located above the boat deck on gravity davits which meant even more deck space for passengers. My favorite was Kungsholm of 1966, this ship along with Sagafjord were IMO two of the serene and lovely liners ever built.

Yes and No.

You're thinking of the previous Kungsholm* which entered sevice in 1953 (not 1960). She was sold to North German Lloyd in the mid-60's and became Europa, a name she continued to carry following the merger with HAPAG to form HAPAG-LLoyd in 1970. She was sold again in late 1981 and became Costa's Columbus C. In 1984 she hit a sea wall at Cadiz. was holed and sank at her berth. She was later raised and sold for scrap.

This Kungsholm was launched in 1965 and entered service in 1966. She was sold to Flagship Cuises in 1975 and retained the name Kungsholm until she was sold to P&O in 1978 and became Sea Princess.

Brian

*Often referred to as Kungsholm 1952 because that was the year she was launched.

SAL sold Kungsholm's two 13-days summer cruises to Bermuda and Canada from New York on Aug 14 and 28, 1975.

Flagship Cruises sold Kungsholm's 14-days Christmas-New Year Cruise from New York on Dec.19, 1975.

Flagship cruises sold Kungsholm's two 14-days summer cruises to Bermuda and Canada from New York on Aug 10 and 24, 1978.

P&O sold Arcadia* to Hong Kong/Sea Princess from Hong Kong cruise out of Sydney on Jan. 29, 1979

Arcadia's final cruise was rescheduled to continue her voyage to Singapore to rendezvous with the Sea Princess, which had been delayed by bad weather affecting her completion.

As it turned out, I think the August 10, 1978 was
the last cruise Flagship had for the Kungsholm.
I think the August 24th cruise was cancelled. I
will need to check my records, but I think Aug.
10th turned into the final cruise.

Victoria's Dining room chairs seemed from Canberra. If it came from Canberra, P&O made a reinforcement on the back of chairs.
