It would be nice to see DOULOS in 2014. I bet she won't be sailing by then, but I hope she will still be around.

I'm not sure how SOLAS will affect her? If it doesn't, I wouldn't be all that surprised to see her still with us for her centennial.

It would certainly be quite something. Not too far away either... She's 89; an extraordinary age for an operating passenger ship!

Now there are small passenger vessels, no doubt, that are older (especially things like lake steamers) but nothing of her size surely.

Incidentally the above list is indeed quite interesting, though it really only covers ships that are or have been cruise ships or liners; passenger ferries are for instance left out and there are plenty of large-ish ones still out there.

Maybe some Arab shiekh will make her his yacht...then she would not be affected by SOLAS, right?

When I was onboard the Doulos in February, there was almost nothing left on the interior from her former life as a ocean liner. Although the outward appearance is still very classic. It seems that they may have already greatly upgraded the ship to comply with safety laws for there was no wood anywhere. I'm not sure if these precautions were meant to keep the Doulos going past 2010. But I also hope to see the Doulos operating for many years to come. Not only is the Doulos a historic ship, but through its ministry so much good is done around the world.

Solas does effect these ships as well. During a visit on the Mercy Ship Anastasis last year I saw that much of her old interior decor and wood work was still present. It surprised me I thought it was dismantled a long time ago. Though it looked nice (not minding the tearing leather ceilings and bits) I asked personal onboard if the Anastasis was effected by Solas. And she certainly is the last update was a ship wide installment of sprinkler systems but if she would pas the future requirements was uncertain. I was given the impression that Anastasis (ex Victoria) is not going to sail that long for Mercy Ships anymore and had to be replaced in the near future.

The same goes for Doulas (and all older ships) As Great Lakes already suggested if all original wood work is already stripped it could mean she would pass Solas regulations and she could still sail around on her 100 birthday (lets be optimistic and hope many of the older ships stay afloat)

Best, Onno

Her bow, superstructure, and stern changed when she became the FRANCA C.
