I have a few the "old" Carnival questions......

1) When did Ted Arison step down and let son take over as CEO?

2) Were the MARDI GRAS and CARNIVALE actual sisters?

3) Why did Carnival stick with the same design concept for their first 3 generation of newbuilds?

Thanks......Keitaro

Draikar,

The Carnivale [now Topaz, was Queen Anna Maria, before Empress of Britain] and the Mardi Gras [now Apollon, was Empress of Canada] are running mates, not sisters. The Mardi Gras was built a few years later with some changes. Empress of Britain and Empress of England were sisters. Empress of England scrapped

Thanks for the info desirod. i heard from other multiple sites claiming M.G. and CARNIVALE are sisters. Even Bob Dickinson of Carnival Crusie Line said that from the "30 Years of Fun" tape.

On possible reason is the same reason why car companies make several cars from the same chassis: it saves money. Actually, as much as I dispeise the line, I love the Fantasy-class design - no lifeboat cutouts, public rooms on upper decks, not a balcony laden condominium ship, actually looks somewhat like a liner...

Actually, the Carnivale and Mardi Gras were sisters, both being built as the same class of ship for Canadian Pacific. The modifications were slight so they are very much the same class of ship.

Ted Arison make Micky the President and CEO title in 1979 and ceded direct, day to day control of Carnival shortly after Micky took it public and turned it into Carnival Corp.

Carnival and Mardi Gras were built as running mates, as Desirod pointed out, by CP in 1957 and 1962. Similar but very different ships.

As for newbuilds, Carnival goes with what works best and what is most cost efficient.

Externally the ships were vastly different in appearance. They came from different yards, and the dimensions were slightly different, Mardi Gras being about 10 feet longer. I'd go with running mates rather than sisters, but as mentioned there were identical sisters (Britain and England) in the Canadian Pacific trans Atlantic service.

Thanks Tim and HomeLines for the info! I thought Micky took over in the mid 80's or later. Did Ted have a say in the company after he gave Micky CEO and President positions? Also, what position did Ted and Micky have before 1979?

As others have said, MARDI GRAS and CARNIVALE were NOT sisters. Their exteriors and interiors were very different.

The following photos are of the Carnivale (top) and the Mardi Gras (bottom). Note how the main deck of Carnivale extends in a straight line as oposed to the tiered effect of the Mardi Gras.

Here's a Carnival Ashtray that shows the three ships from the 1970s.

Thanks for the pics Joe! They do look different, but if you look carefully you could see a little similarity. Was the extended aft decks on the CARNIVALE added from her Greek Line days?

The aft deck extensions on the Carnivale were done by the Greek Line in converting the Empress of Britain II into the warm weather Queen Anna Maria.

Carnival looked at her and the laid up Olympia at the time. I would be curious to know why they did not pick her up too?

Carnivale in her Empress of Britain days did have the tiered decks similar to Mardi Gras/Empress of Canada. So, they looked much more similar in the Canadian Pacific days.

What did the interiors of the Carnival ships of the 1970's look like? Were they as tacky as they are today?

I would consider them sisters but not twins, which you guys are speaking of. Here's an example. The Mauritania and Lusitania were built in different yards, were slightly different in size, and had many unique design features. Yet they still had certain restrictions and were fairly similar. The Lusitania had hinge-topped vents, the Mauritania had cowl vents, Lusitania had 3 bladed propellers, Mauritania had four. They were as much sisters as any other ships I can think of. You are just too used to the generic boxes of today, which are indeed twins. The bottom line is they were sisters but not TWINS.

I have always felt that they fell somewhere in between sisters and fleetmates. Obviously the design of the Empress of Canada was based to a large degree on the Empresses of Britain and England, but she had many differences. Here are two images of them in their original state.

Empress of Britain (Carnivale)

Empress of Canada (Mardi Gras)

Up until his death, Ted was actively involved in consulting for the company's newbuilds. Before he became CEO, Micky had a lot of jobs. He first started with the company in reservations, worked as a sales rep and a bunch of other jobs.

I was always of the impression that in Maritme circles, the term "sister ships" meant identical ships. For example the 4 Saxonia sisters, Argentian/Brazil, Michelangelo/Raffaello, Jubilee/Celebration but not Holiday, Song of Norway/Nordic Prince but not Sun Viking, Legend/Splendor of the Seas but not the other 4 etc. Running mates and fleet mates meant somthing else. I guess I was wrong.

Here's a couple of photos of the original Carnival ships:

Carnivale

Mardi Gras

Festivale

These were sturdy old ships that set the bar for FUN cruise ships. I remember fondly, the days that I would explore these ships in Miami. I would sip a smoothie on deck just like a passenger and dream of someday going on a cruise for myself.

TOO bad BRB III has left for "death". There are many out there that should go before her . Atleast, there are two ex- "FUN ships" that are still "living".
