The 1951-built SS INDEPENDENCE was sold this morning at auction in Sacramento to a company called California Manufacturer's Corporation for the sum of $4,050,000.00. Plans for her future have not yet been disclosed.

I just read that on Maritime Matters before coming here.
WOW. Let's hope it puts her out to sea again. But what a strange sum they bought her for.

Wasn't her scrap value placed at around $2.3 million or so? I guess this $4.05 million figure means she's safe for the time being. California Manufacturer's Corp. seems like a strange name for a cruise line

It will be interesting to see what they have in store for her.

California Manufacturer's Corporation is some parent company that manufacturers stuff, I guess they are going to lease her out or start there own cruise company subsidiary.

I cannot find any information about a company named "California Manufacturer's Corporation" on the web. I suspect it is a new company created to buy the ship - for what purpose I do not know. I hope that they have plans to keep her afloat but would not put money on it.
