It has been reported in an the Herald Sun (an Australian on-line newspaper) that the QE2 was making her final call at Melbourne, Australia, before being replaced by the QM2.

I though that Cunard claimed that the QE2 would still be used for cruising?

The Herald Sun has got it wrong, Cunard will still send QE2 on her annual world cruise once QM2 is is service and she will continue to visit Australian ports. (Maybe not Melbourne for a couple of years?) QM2 is too big to go through the Panama Canal, leaving the world cruise in QE2's hands for the next few years. QE2 will be finishing up for good by 2010 when new SOLAS rules will see her needing a very costly refit or face retirement.

Why does QE2 even visit Australia? She should go back to doing 80 day world cruises and bee-line up to Hong Kong from Singapore.

QE2's world cruise is heavily supported by Australians, some who do the whole journey and many travelling on the sectors to and from Australia. Besides being a nice place to visit for all the other passengers, QE2 comes downunder to help fill beds with Aussies.

hmmmm....thats like saying why does the QE2 visit LA....there's nothin there...except disneyland and the studios.....it's a call to pic up american passenger's for the voyage across the pacific or the rest of the voyage around the world...australia has to be one of the most beautiful places to visit...especially sydney...plus the buck goes a long way there too.....jeff

Cruise ships are welcomed in Australia with great enthusiasm I can assure you! We only have an opportunity to see or join a cruise from here during October to April (reverse situation of Vancouver jeffrossatsea ?) - so interest runs high. Otherwise it is a very long way for us to go to join a cruise from US, UK or Europe.

Sydney, at least has been a traditional port of call for world cruises for longer than I care to remember. I have done 3 half-world voyages to/ from Sydney since the 1970's (yikes!!) According to the cruise schedule on Sydney Port Authority's website the QE2 has a berth booked 16 February 2004, so it looks like we will fortunately be able to see her here at least once more.

yes...i saw the QE2 on the sydney web cam with the liner docked a circular quay...very nice site to see the opera house as a back ground....jeff

Jeffrossatsea, as a Sydneysider I never meant to suggest that Sydney or Australia was not worth visiting. In fact with passengers Sydney is one of the most popular ports visited during P&O and Cunard's world cruises for very good reason. What I was saying was that QE2 comes to Sydney and other Australian ports every single year because so many Australians sail on the ship each year. If they didn't it is likely that QE2's intinery would occasionally change and on some years miss Australia to provide more variety.

...take it from an original aussie from adelaide....that's where i saw the beloved QE2 on a warm sunny 8am morning arrive at my hometown...i'll never forget it....and i have pics to remind myself of the beauty....jeff
