Hi Everyone!

I was just listening to the news and heard that the city of New York is considering housing the cities homeless on cruise ships. The report stated that officials were en-route to the Bahamams to inspect the out of sevice ships currently laid up on the island.
Anyone have any thoghts on this matter? I don't know what to think? I feel horrible because my first thought was not that the homeless would have a safe and warm place to sleep. My first concern was about which ship they would pick? I am not heartless! I am just a slave to my addition of cruise ships.
Wait!!! I know!!! Why don't I give my apartment to the homeless and I will go live on the ship!!! Could you imagine going home everynight to the Rembrant or one of the BRB's?

Smooth Seas!

The report was that Bloomberg was looking into bringing the BRB2, former Eugenio C, to the city to ease the shortage on shelters. For the price it certainly can't be beat, especially in NYC, where land is at such a premium. I think they also liked the fact that families could stay together, and that the ship had such large catering facilities. It could be interesting, as long as it is the BRB2 and not the Rembrandt...

I just saw a story on this on the morning news but while they were telling the report they showed a pic of the Carnival Destiny! I'll bet alot of people would volunteer to be homeless to get a free room on her.

Draikar,

The REMBRANDT is a floating museum, which just needs someone with enough cash and vision to make her a hotel ship (in Holland, if possible! ).
BRB II, meanwhile, might be lovely from the outside, but both her interiors and machinery are completely knackered. If turning her into a homeless shelter saves from a single to Alang (for the time being), than that is a move that is to applauded.

Yes, if they turn the Rembrandt into a homeless shelter, like MICHELANGELO /RAFFAELLO she'll be lost forever, at least, right now she still have a chance to go back into service, turn into a museum or a floating Hotel.

How many people can the BRB II carry? Would be curious if they would gutted out all the public space and add additional cabins into it to maximize capacity.

Regarding the use of Carnival Destiny on a tv news report on this story....I don't know what to think. I am sure the video editor was in a hurry and had limited resources - did (s)he just grab some video news release put out by Carnival --OR-- is there some editorializing or even outright rhetoric going on here? We Cruisetalkers know the difference between a laid up ship and a state of the art flagship. But what about the general public?

Some of the homeless are mentally disturbed; some have multitudes of kids.

Requirement: All weather decks would have to be closed or there would be many "overboards." One would be too many.

This could be a pricey requirement before ships, of any type, could be used for such purposes.

Just a thought!

The Rembrandt is a floating museum and a very good sailing vessel also. Would hate to see it tied up some place (as it is now). I don't oppose use of ships for homeless but the Rembrandt is special. What happened to the group trying to take it back to Holland?
