She was built for Italy - New York service.In August 1933 she captured the Blue Riband with an average speed of 28.92 knots, over the Bremen's 28.51 knots. Her record crossing would hold until the Normandie won the Riband in May 1935.Laid up from 1940 first in Bari and then in Trieste, on 09-08-1944 (exactly 58 years ago) she was sighted by RAF bombers, and was hit by 123 rockets.She burst into flames by her entire length and on the following day capsized and sank in the shallow waters off Trieste where she was anchored.She was scrapped during 1947-58.

She was indeed one of the most beautiful ships in the world... Absolutely spectacular.
My grandfather remembers visiting her, he gets a far-away look in his eyes when I mention this ship .
