Hi Jeff, I also once started building an Normandie model only the basic forms are there (haven’t finished it yet) If you like I could e-mail you the material I found on the ship which also includes some detailed deck plans of the ship.

If you finish your model you should place them here in the photo gallery, I would love to see them. One tip take a good look at the funnels they are al different in size and quit tricky to get the correct shape into it, even though they look easy. For now here are some pictures of my unfinished model.

Best from Holland, Onno

Onno!
That is BEAUTIFUL! You do excellent work! Your scale looks exact! More pictures!!!!!

What materials are you using?

Are you just building this from information and drawings you found, or did you get your hand on some plans?

Either way, your workmanship is fantastic. You have a real talent for this. I would love to see it as you progress!

PS I have seen an ad in modeling mags for a set of plans for the Normandie. Has anyone ever purchased them or know if there worth ordering?

Thanks again for the photos, Onno!

Hello,

Onno that is outstanding. You have a real eye for things like this though - your website gets the design award of all the cruise sites IMO.

But that is really spectacuar!

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

Actually I got the Idea of building a model of the Normandie after seeing a five meter long model of Normandie in the France pavilion of the world expo 2000 in Germany. I had verry little visual info about Normandie so I did some gathering. So I based my model on the pictures of the ship. (the book “picture history of the Normandie” by Frank O. Braynard is an excellent book with many pictures)

The main material I used is cardboard to make the skeleton of the ship and then I filed the open spaces with clay to get a smooth hull. I intend to complete model when I got some spare time and it would be nice to compare our models when they are finished.

Well don Jeff and thanks for the progress update, jugging at the size in the picture your making it in the same scale as mine model and the instruction sheet I mailed you. When I was surging in my “archives” for you I also picked up the urge to work on my Normandie model again. I’m now trying at my sixth attempt to make the funnels and finally I have the funnels as I want it or at least they look more like the Normandie funnels as the other five attempts.

Best Onno

Hello,

Jeff, yours is great too .

Personally I do not have a knack for things like this... If it comes to art, I can usually envision it - but it never comes out as I envision. The exception is photography for the most part. But modelling, drawing, sculpture, etc. I can see what I want but the result is almost always abysmal.

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

Hi all,

You have quite a pace and it looks great already. Here is an update of my progress and I’m working more on the details which is actually the most fun part of building a model I think.

Best, Onno

Hi Jeff,

I had several attempt before I had the funnels right, though they look easy they are sure hard to copy. I first tried to make the funnel out of one piece but that almost impossible (especially in a smaller scale) and it is difficult to maintain the symmetry. I would suggest to make the droplet shaped initial funnel and then do the flared base it is the best solution I found and more easy to keep the funnel in symmetry. Do mind that on a front view of a funnel the flared base is protruding outwards from the funnel but in a side view the flared base is alined with the droplet shape of the funnel.

Hi Jeff,

No not really the droplet shaped “inner funnel” is entirely one piece from the decks up and the flared base is a second part that is like a coat wrapped around the droplet shaped inner funnel. So the funnel is made out of two parts.

Best, Onno

first onno...thanks for the input on making this model...i just about gave up on it knowing it was'nt going to be like building one of my own models....but the input you have given me has made me go further and now i have practically finished the structure of the ship and now its onto detailing...and a few touch ups....then painting. i managed to build the funnels from one piece with the cardboard cut at the base at every 2 1/2 mm then bent them out...then coating the base with a lot of layers of glue to smoothen it out....the 3rd pic should be in the gallery today...thanks again onno.....jeff

Hi Jeff,

How is your Normandie coming a long? About the lifeboats good question, I’m also looking for a way to make those. Maybe from a commercial model kit of another ocean liner. Maybe some of the other cruise talk members got some suggestions how to make those little lifeboats? For now I think I will leave the lifeboats for last. Here are some pictures of how my model looks now. I painted her hull black, painted the decks with a wooden deck structure, painted the funnels and added more details.

Best, Onno
