In the Potpurri section of the photo gallery I've posted a picture of the Queen Mary in a Mobil Oil ad from the May 24, 1937 edition of Life Magazine. It seems kind of tacky.

I love old magazine ads, especially the ones for cruise lines and ships. Thanks for sharing this neat ad, Whitestar!

Are you sure Barryboat? I've just checked a couple of books of mine and both show 200,000, being 50,000shp per shaft. Normandie had 160,000 and it was the proud boast of her designer, Vladimir Yourkevich, that despite having 40,000 SHP less, Normandie was only a fraction of a knot slower than QM, mainly due to Normandie's more efficient underwater hull shape.

Barryboat and nzmike,
I´ve also checked some books and they state QM had 160.000 hp, same as Normandie! Same books show 181.700 hp for QE. What´s in your books for her?

a book i have on the queen mary
by james steele says:
approximately 200,000 horsepower
or 50 modern passenger locomotives each having 4000 h.p
each turbine on the q.m. turned
at 3600 rpm. each turbine was
supplied with 400 psi, 700 deg.
steam from 6 yarrow boilers.
a total of 24 boilers provided
steam to the 4 turbines that
propeled the ship.

I've read 145,000 - 165,000 HP

Note PamM, that the artist rendition came out before the Queen Mary was built and tested, and the ad says "approximately" 200,000 HP. Of course in those days, and sometimes today, facts are exaggerated slightly. SS United States had 245,000 HP which was a secret. I'll get my Queen Mary Shipbuilder's book and check the facts.

I don't know what the true figures are, it does say approx. Just that's on her prom, so one would tend to think it about right. However the QM site says 160,000. Quite a difference really.

I suspect the difference may be arising due to different methods of measuring hp - there is shp which is shaft horsepower and ihp which is indicated horse power - I understand there is quite a difference between the two. Any engineers out there care to comment?
