Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother passed away last night at the age of 101. In her lifetime she had cristened many classic liners, including her namesake the QUEEN ELIZABETH. She also had two ships named after her, the QUEEN ELIZABETH and QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 (the Roman numeral II would denote the present morarch, the Arabic numeral simply implies that this is the second ship w/ the name "Queen Elizabeth") So let us reflect on her long and meaningfull life. She is gone, but she will never be forgotten.

This is a very sad day for the entire Commonwealth.

I find it so interesting that while watching TV, I notice the US channels are talking about the tragedies in middle east; the Canadian channels are talking about the passing of the Queen Mum.

How two countries so close geographically can be so different with respect to political priorities is very interesting.

It is so interesting how our New World histories influence how we perceive the monarchy.

God bless the Queen Mother.

The Queen Mother had a very close tie to the Cunard Queens. I am sure there will be a service aboard QE2. It is a sad day for the commonwealth.

As a tribute they should name the Cunard Vista Class ship The Queen Mum. It would probably be an instant favorite!

To Malcolm and all the other uk citizens on this board I would like to convey my condolences on the Queen Mum's passing. She was truly a fine example of how the monarcy should act and feel towards it's citizens.. We see her, here in the US on CNN strollong thru the streets after the bombings and being with the ordinary people. It's no wounder the people held her in such affection.

By the way Jamacia Jeff that would be a great name for a ship. If we can believe the news reports her, it seems she did have a zest for life, they say she like gin and horse racing, so a ship by that name would be a tribute for her since she still would be bringing fun to people.

Hey Geno-R:

Don't forget she was not just the Queen Mum of the UK but of all members of the Commonwealth i.e. Canada, Australia etc.

This is a sad loss for the entire Commonwealth...not just the UK.

In Canada, there is much coverage both TV and newspaper - all of our flags are at half staff...it truly is a sad event.

It truly is a sad day here in Canada. She was much loved and will be sadly missed.
I remember my parents taking me to a train station in Toronto in 1939 to see the Royal couple as they passed through. How exciting for a 6 year old.
Another time, my daughter and I were leaving a building when we heard that the street was closed off as the Queen Mum's entourage would be passing.
We quickly ran across the once busy street and waited until she passed. She waved to us as we were the only one standing there - what a thrill for both of us. My daughter mentioned that to me today.
Our deepest sympathy to her family. It is a very sad year in this our Queen's Jubilee year, to have lost both her sister and her darling Mum in such a short time.

Hello,

May I extend my condolences to the entire Commonwealth. The Queen Mother was one of the most beloved monarchs of modern times, and an asset not only to her countries but to the entire international community. She will be missed.

Here in the US, I am saddened to see what little coverage her death received. She did much to solidify our relationship with the UK, our staunchest ally, and should be remembered for her actions during World War II. She sould also be remembered by all liner enthusiasts for her close connection to the Cunard Queens.

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

I would like to offer my condolences to all of our UK and Commomwealth friends on the passing of the Queen Mum. She was truly a lovely lady and her love for her citizens showed everytime she greeted them.

I also feel for Princes Charles, William, and Harry to have suffered so many losses in such a short period of time....

When the Queen Mother passed away over Easter weekend, I was attending the bi-annual "Warbirds over Wanaka" event, held in New Zealands South Island. As a special tribute, a DC3 made a low pass over the airfield escorted by a Spitfire and a Hurricane, all three being aircraft the Queen Mother would have seen regularly over the skies of London during the war. Bagpipe music was played over the PA as the glorious sound of two Merlins and two P&W radials roared over. A very moving moment!

No offence to our many American friends - I just wish you would acknowledge our grief (or joy) as we're expected to acknowledge yours.

In the Lido for breakfast the morning of the Queen Mum's passing, I was approached, individually, by 4 Dutch Officers - all expressed condolences "on your great loss" - Holland also has Royalty and could appreciate my sadness.

Sitting close to 6 Americans the discussion was the Queen Mum's first name!...not one of them (all seniors) could think of it.....followed by the comment 'she was only a figurehead anyway'. I got up and left! Maybe the Queen Mum was a 'figurehead' - an 'institution' envied by many Americans - something they wish they had!.

Due, I suppose, to the fact that at least 98% of passengers on board the Statendam were American, I heard no official acknowledgement of that great lady's passing.

Green,
As an American, I would like to express how sorry I am for the lack of any feeling or concern from your American shipmates. When I heard the news of the Queen Mums' passing I was deeply saddened and hope that you understand that there are others here who very muched admired and loved her. Please don't think that all of us are as ignorant and self-absorbed as the "ship of fools" that you were so unfortunate to be surrounded by.
Be assured, my friend, that there are many more people here in the States and around the world who loved and admired the Queen Mother very much and are mourning the her loss along with you.
And, your right, we should be envious that we don't have a "figurehead" like the Queen Mum. Those "fools" on your ship show perfectely what not having one can turn you into.
My sencere condolences to you and all of the Commonwealth on the loss of the Queen. Her passing is a loss to everyone. (Whether they are smart enough to realize it or not).

Michael

Hello,

I am most saddened to hear of the attitude of the many Americans on your recent cruise. I can only suggest that some of us do not think in such a way. I must admit that many Americans are rather self-centered on such affairs, and that the less intelligent members of our community think of monarchs as tyrants, as is tought in our schools when discussing the American Revolution... I am truly sorry about this and would like to again extend my condolences. I am very saddened by her death, as she was, though many do not realize it, a great friend of America...

Best Regards,
CruiseNY

Not all Brits of course are big fans of the Monarchy - after all it is us that have to pay for it! However, it is important to respect other people’s beliefs and culture.

I was on the SS Norway, crossing the Atlantic, on September 11th. I am pleased to say that all the Europeans onboard that I met, were very respectful towards our American friends.

It would have been easy to think that the events did not happend in my city or to my friends. However, such a tragedy transends national boarders. It was a global tragedy.

I personality attended the ‘service’ for the victims, held onboard the SS Norway.

To Michael 543, CruiseNY and all other posters - thank you sincerely for your thoughts.

To Malcolm - I understand your sentiments. However, regardless of our country of residence, we all contribute to the upkeep of our 'heads of state'. I'm far from totally accepting of expenditures by our 'heads' here in Canada - they come and go - UK's Royal Family goes on (hopefully) for ever.

Back to cruising - the lady is at peace now.

Forgive me if I sound rude, but Brits always seem so quick to complain about the percieved "high cost" of the monarchy, while accepting their socialist government's unbelievably high taxes. US$5 a LITER gasoline prices (80% of it from tax), industry taxes so crippling that almost all major British companies are now foregin-owned, and annual tax on TV'S!! Not to mention the unfairly high tax rate for the extremely rich. You endrure all this, but complain about the Royal Expenditures! New studies show that the UK governent spends more per year on flu shots than it does on the monarchy. Surely a first-world democracy can afford that?

My daughter just returned from a week in London where she was on business.
Last Saturday, she travelled to Windsor to visit Windsor Castle and pay her respects to the Queen Mum. She said it was awsome to see where so many of our Kings and Queens have been laid to rest.
I think she was a little taken aback to view the tombs of Queen Mary and King George V. She said to me "the faces looked just like them"!

Friend aboard the Sunbird tells me that on the day of QM's funeral, they had a minute's silence and played God Save The Queen on the PA. Every passenger, of whatever nationality, respected the silence.

A nice gesture, much appreciated.
