I just recieved an email about the Rembrandt. It seems that International Shipping Partners has dropped the asking price of the Rembrandt down to 10 million dollars U.S. but are at least hoping to get 8 million for her as scrap or for service with other owners.

FROM THE ROTTERDAM FOUNDATION
Almost a year ago we started the Steamship Rotterdam Foundation in order to make the Dutch authorities aware of the unique character of the former Holland America Line vessel s.s. Rotterdam V. Ever since we try to persuade them to preserve the ship and bring her back to Rotterdam.
In the past two months one thing became quite clear: the chance the s.s. Rotterdam will ever sail again as a cruise-ship is almost nill! The present owner of the vessel is now about to sell it to anyone who brings in cash money. No doubt, breakers will be on the look-out! Therefore time is running out. The Steamship Rotterdam Foundation will increase her efforts to bring the ship back home. There are possibilities in Rotterdam, but many problems must be solved first.
If you wish to support us once again, please don't hesitate to do so!

Met vriendelijk groet/ Kind regards,
Jan-Willem Koene
Secretaris

Hello,

It is incredibly sad that this fine old lady might not make it. She is a truly wonderful vessel and while she may sadly be impractical for further active cruise service, she deserves to be preserved as an icon of the liner era, hopefully in a far more tasteful and respectful way than old Queen Mary. If I had the $10,000,000 I would buy her myself. I'm sure there would be plenty of monetary contributions and volunteer help.

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

What kind of condition is she in now?

8 million for seven years' service sounds like a bargain...

1000 berths x 350 days in service * 200 USD per berth per day = 70 million USD income.

Yes, 8 million sounds like a bargain. And if we can only find 2,000 people who is willing to put down $10,000 each to form a limited partnership in purchasing her, (ie. having the extra 12 million as seed money for refurbishment, setting up the new cruise line, burn money for the next 7 years) she will be able to sail again.

Hello,

Desirod6, those are very nice models of three different versions of designs for Rotterdam V. It shows what a wonderful imagination the Dutch designers had who designed the ship.

As for me, I probably love the three funnels most, but that is irrelevant as she is, in real life, a model of magnificent design, one of the most beautiful ships in the world, one that deserves to be lovingly preserved in the best of taste, like Coloinal Williamsburg - a living, working example of the best of history, done with complete authenticity, and without tackiness or insulting the object being displayed as is sadly done now with Queen Mary .

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

I had heard that Regal Cruises wanted to buy her, as a running mate to Olympia, but DLJ would not come down enough on price.

FOOLS!

the regal empress burns 24 tons
of fuel a day in her diesels
for propulsion.
how much fuel do you think rembrant burns in a day?
rembrant would need to be solas
upgraded which regal cruise line
may not be able to afford.
one of the main reasons regal empress is still around is because of her low fuel consumption, low fares and nostalga.

Moodus,

Rembrandt is SOLAS Compliant, Premier spent $5million to meet the requirements. Rembrandt burns 196[15 knots]-250[full speed]tons a day, but can make 25 knots and distills all of her own water. She was designed for World Cruises, as was Canberra.

The Regal Empress according to ISP, burns 50 tons a day at 17 knots, she can do 19 knots huffing and puffing with a clean hull. The RE can only go 7 days w/o replenishing potable water.

DLJ is not is the shipping business. If Regal could buy her for cash, the lack of interest payments would offset the fuel costs.

hi desirod6
the info. i have about the fuel
consumption of the regal empress
came off a fact sheet from the
bridge.
also both regal empress and
rembrant meet solas requirements
to year 2010.
fuel consumption: 150 tons x $120 a ton = $18,000 a day

Hasn't anyone heard that Mayor Bloomberg is interested in purchasing Rembrandt & Big Red Boat II for shelters for the homeless? This was an actual news media story about a few months ago.

If Regal Cruises is looking for a second ship, they should look into M.S. Phillipens,(EX Agustus)
She is diesel, about the same size as Regal Empress etc There is a good history lesson about the Phillipens on Maritime Matters.com

Whilst the MS Phillipines is a wonderful ship, she has been modified in certain ways internally, some of which would require reversal for further service. She has also not been modernised for many years and lacks many of the amenities of a more modern ship. Whilst we ship enthusiasts may love her, I doubt that a company looking for a competitive ship would think similarly.
