Italian Cruiser, I saw
a photo of the Emerald Seas in Genoa. Do you know
what is happening with her? It looks like her smokestacks have been repainted. Is she coming back into service?

I would like to see that old ship cruising again. I've often wondered what's up with that ship. Wasn't recently called the Saphire Seas?

I'm sorry but I haven't any news regarding the future of the Emerald Seas:I only know that this is the only laid up cruise ships chartered by the italian governament for the G8 and that it's currently owned by Majestic Cruises ( also owners of the Ocean Majesty ).I totally agree with you that is a fasinating classic vessel ( loks splendid ) but I think that there are few opportunities for its reenter in service.

She is currently named Ocean Explorer 1 and is in very good shape mechanically, and OK shape from a passenger facility perspective. She'll be back somehow, she can carry 900 + in lower berths, so someone will put her in service as she is too attractive from a passenger density perspective. Don't count her out. She was on a WEorld Cruise service in 1999/2000 that she handled pretty well and had major work done on her for that.

One of her long standing problems has ironically been one of the factors that has kept her afloat. When built as a US troopship the hull was incredibly well constructed and hence exceptionally heavy. This prevented her use on longer or faster itineraries as her fuel consumption was high. I understand she did very well as Emerald Seas for so long because she ran on short trips at low speed that significantly reduced the problem.

With a complete Boiler overhaul (There are four, two in each of the two engine rooms) and the extension and tapering of her stability sponsons, she did close to 16 knots in trials in late 1999. For her World Cruises, she averaged 15+ for days on end without ever faltering.

Unfortunately, she was burning 100 tons of bunker C oil a day doing it, which is not unreasonable in a steam vessel, but horrible when compared to a similarly sized diesel ship.

You are right about the hull. There is very little steel thinning anywhere, and the bilge areas look like she was built 5 years ago instead of 60. IOne always assumes a war built vessel will have a bunch of conrers cut during construction, but no where on this ship is anything less than first class from a construction perspective.

I also had the magnificent view of the Ocean Explorer 1 at Genova last July 14th.
The smokestacks were painted for the failed world tour of 99/00. I saw this ship laid up at Eleusis in July 2000, already with these colours.
From ashore she seemed to be in very good condition.

According to what I read
on MaritimeMatters.com
It's being run by someone
and been given a new name.
I also noticed that most of the ships at the G8 summit were liners of the
past. Way to go girls, it's nice to see how much
Europeans hold onto their
classics.
