What is the best meal that you have had on a cruise ship? Do you have a favourite?

Or failing that, what was the worst meal that you ever had?

My favorite ever was a filet mignon on the Horizon. It was like butter, better than a chateaubriand. I asked for another, and they provided it. Ironically, it was the next night when I had the worst: turkey, that tasted like it had come from a TV dinner suffering from freezer burn. I sent it back and and salmon instead, which was delicious.

Food!!! My favorite subject. The best meal by far was on the Pacific Princess. A wonderful rack of lamb served with asparagus.
Dessert... and I ordered two... was creme brulee......and a souffle with passion fruit cream. Had I known my cabinmate chose that night to celebrate my birthday... I would have neve ordered two desserts... for Princess sent out a wonderful chocolate confection. A four inch high filled "stovepipe" of dark chocolate. The bottom layer was a sponge cake, followed by chocolate ganache (denser than mousse) followed by mocha mousse and topped with fresh whipped cream. Suffice to say, I had difficult leaving my chair!! Unfortunately that night was the chocolate buffet at 11:30PM. While we were at the early seating on this cruise, I could not partake of my favorite... chocolate... even at 11:30 and had to settle for a simple cup of darjeeling tea:-( My cabinmate said the chocolate goodies were divine!!

My favorite cruise meal was a delicious rack of lamb with peppercorn prepared by ace chef Wolfgang recently on the Zaandam. Superb.

Hi...last year on the Marco Polo when we were in Safaga, where everyone except 10 of us did the overnight to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings - bin there, done that - they did a special dinner for us. Lobster, Caesar salad, and steak Diane....the best one we've ever had anywhere. Plus wines of course, and a liqueur with the coffee. Excellent

Do hope Wolfgang is still on the Zaandam in November when I will be there. I really do enjoy his food. Rack of lamb with peppercorn sounds delicious.

Just here thinking about Chef Chris Walters' roasted breast of Long Island duck with liggonberry sauce aboard the MISSISSIPI QUEEN still elicits a Pavlovian response from me. The crisp golden skin laying atop the rich dark juicy meat was all sublime, and covering the whole creation was the just right amount of sweet liggonberry sauce. Excuse me while my mouth orgasms!

I haven't sailed too many cruise lines since I just started sailing. I usually try to aim for ships that interest me. I have to admit there is a special place in my heart for the Chef on the Regal Empress and I don't know how they do it. Anything I ordered on a Premier ship (especially towards the end) I made sure I ordered a baked potato (even the waiter caught on he would say "just in case"). Almost every meal was a "just in case". Thank goodness I wasn't disappointed in the ships Rembrandt, SeaWind Crown and Island Breeze. NCL's Majesty food was good but we were alone in the dining room due to very bad seas and that dining room being in the wrong place on the ship.

Well I guess I know what it takes to get a decent response to a question: Have Malcolm or Joe ask it! I asked this same thing in the Cruise Ship forum and received 3 responses! Oh well. Here's what I said:

On the Norway last year, I remember in particular one apperizer we had at dinner, some very tasty escargot. It had just the right amount of garlic and butter.
Also, I dont' know the correct name for this (Carpacio?), very thinly sliced raw beef (YUM). They also did it with Veal, but I prefer the cow!

I think I asked it first? Anyway it has taken since May to get this far! I've asked questions in the past and have had few/no responses, too.

You might have noticed that Joe does not normally ask questions as such! He addresses us, like the Pope, as someone once said.

Maybe not the best, but the most decadent:

Oceanic Big Red Boat served full lobster tails one night (not the split-down-the-middle half tails) and I got a double order.

So did my 98 lb grandma. Guess who had THREE tails for dinner.

On that same trip, a retired couple from the deep south (USA) ordered for lunch a fish entree in a puff pastry shell, like a pot pie. She said in a slowww drawwlll, "this is the best fish I've ever had!" My sister and I still say this as an inside joke whenever we eat fish together.

Malcolm:
forgive me please, but i find your question rather silly, yes surpefluous.
How can you argue about food/taste would ask this question about Religion and/or Politics? I doubt that very much.
Just responding to some of the mails posted here: Rack-of-Lamb, many people hate lamb, find the smell offending! Chocolate?? Yuk!!
ilet Mignon?? Every Chef and connoisseur would claim that other cuts of the "cow" are much tasetier, not to mention of course vegetarian and the "Greens".
In 1984 Paquet French Cruises (remember them?) did a culinary/musical cruise onboard the Rhapsody from Miami. Several Chefs from europe including Paul Bacuse, complemented the regular ship's Chefs. Comment cards evaluation was the usual hi-lo reponse, from the best food - to die for - and on the other sied: I would not feed such food to my help, dog etc.etc.
Those of us who have worked in the hospitality field, food preperation/service have seena steady decline in onbaord quality as well as the quality of those going on cruises. If a guest is aquating "fantastic service" with being poured water, ice tea and coffee, before the meal? it shows that those at the table are accustomed to "dine" at the "family restaurant" next door. To eat Spagetti with meat-balls!!! and proclaiming Lobster and Ceasar Salad to be the highlight of a cruise. Please, forgive me. this shows really how ignorant those folks are. But, again how can we argue about taste?? this what they like, enjoy and I can appreciate it. Some like their meat burned, others eat it "english" or raw, who is right who is wrong??
so, IF YOU MUST POST A QUESTION LETS BE A BIT MORE INVESNTIVE MALCOLM.
SHAME ON YOU, YOU CAN DO MUCH BETTER THAN THAT!!
We still love you though....
keep on writing.

Lacarno, I feel no shame! I've posted much sillier questions than this one, in the past! After 3600+ post it's amazing that I'm not asking questions like "What is a ship"?

Anyway, it obviously moved you enough to reply to it!

We poor old pensioners who, after buying a couple of cans of catfood to eat, manage to save a few pennies to go a cruise.
We're among the humble folk who really enjoy lobster & other gourmet foods.
After all we don't get to eat this way every day

They say that you can request any food in the QE2's Queens Grill. I wonder if that includes cat food?

We've had lots of best meals on our numerous cruises. Since no one has responded to the worst meal, I will.

This occurred on the Island Breeze in April of 2000. This was the next-to-the-last cruise around the Canary Islands.

I thought I had bought a Premier Cruise, but the ship had been leased to Thomson Cruises.

First runnerup to worst meal: we had sirloin steaks one night. Five out of the six people at the table could not chew them and they were returned. The sixth person spent a long time chewing.

The worst meal was their jambalya (sp?). This consisted of pasta in a cream sauce with sliced-up hot dogs. I can cook this at home.

As a side comment, I always get nervous when my husband eats lamb. On multiple situations, he has either gotten seasick or we have encountered heavy seas.

I don't think Malcolm's question is silly....
The question was "What is the best meal that YOU have had....do YOU have a favorite"?

Malcolm was asking for the opinion of Cruise Talkers what "THEY"RE" favorite meal experience is or was, NOT what is THE best meal overall.

It's just like the question, "what is YOUR favorite ship?" I hate to say this locarno, but you're all wet.

MY favorite meal was aboard the Royal Princess sometime in 1986...I forgot what I had but remember it was fantastic. My most memorable meals were in the staff mess aboard the Zenith, and in the dining room aboard the Song of America. Every week on Wednesday mornings aboard the Song of America I would have eggs benedict before I would lead a group to see the ancient Mayan Ruins of Tulum. The best steak I ever had was aboard the Zaandam...so good I ordered another. Best Pasta I HAD was aboard the CostaClassica. The weirdest food I had was aboard the QE2 in the Princess Grill...Foods I didn't recognize, duck liver and weird stuff like that. The worst food I ever had on a cruise ship was on the NORWAY and the Staff Mess on the Empress.
