Although this has nothing at all to do with ships, I understand that the USA now has our Quiz Show "The weakest Link" with our very own Ann Robinson?

Yes Malcolm it's in Canada too...watched it last night and must say that the questions are all quite easy and basic...I think she responds quite appropriately when someone misses a question so easy...

Being Canadian, I appreciate the dry British wit she has - I don't know how the Americans perceive her - she might come off as too arrogant or patronizing as they tend to have a different sense of humour - overall - the CDN's or Brits.

Turned it on accidently on Monday and thoroughly enjoyed it. I couldn't believe Ann Robinson - at first I thought "Oh, what a b****, but as the show progressed, I really liked her. Some of the questions are quite easy, but I guess when you are up there and nervous the answers just don't come to you.
It wasn't listed in our TV Guide for last night, but was able to catch it again last night on CTV, (on in place of Millionaire on Cdn. channel) Will have to watch and see if it pops again tonight.
Couldn't believe how mad the contestants who were voted off were. Almost like Survivor!

I'm not a big fan myself, but it is very popular here in the UK. Anne Robinson has already been called a "British Bitch" by American critics, but of course it's only an act!

She used to present a British consumer TV show. She used to give representatives from Travel companies a hard time, when they had sold a bad holiday or cruise*!

The questions are easy but I suppose the reason is so stupid people can enjoy it too.

(*See Joe, there is a cruise connection in this post! )

It is on here in the U.S., and has generated a lot of publicity. We haven't heard much about Ann Robinson, but I find her quite amusing. It seems the American contestants aren't very good at "banking" money -- only banked $38,000 last night. Do the Brits have trouble with that aspect of the game also, or is that, as Ms. Robinson put it, a product of the poor American educational system?

I love the weakest link and I think Ann Robinson has the sharpest tongue. She has given up Watchdog to take the show to the US and I hope it is successful for her, she has quite a history here as a well respected journalist and I really miss her weekend column in the Times already. When I first caught the Weakest Link it was on early evening when I first got home from the office, I could not believe what I was seeing and after a hard day she was giving the smart alec answers I had sat on all day long and I thought it was hilarious. The dominatrix act goes down very well here, especially with professional men, we women love to associate with her, just love it.

I dont like to see anybody being denigrated, even if its just play acting.

The MC was also emoting too much. Needless to say, I'll stick to Millionaire.

To stay on topic. ----I think I must take another cruise soon.

On my visits back to England to see family I thought British television was really 'the pits'.

Saw 'The weakest link' last night which just confirmed my original opinion - hokey!

Caught the show last night - don't know that it's the greatest but I'll watch again.

When reduced to 3 players and you're one of them, who would you vote off?

Can't agree that British TV is the pits - Masterpiece Theatre for example, is excellent - and there are many other great shows - thank heaven for PBS.

Grumple, you have to be kidding, what about:

Britass empire
Keeping up appearances
Monty Python
Allo Allo

To name a few. These come close to and are almost as good as "The Royal Canadian Air Farce" but not quite.

I must go to sea soon.

What did your post have to do with cruising?

Hmmm...the 'Bradizon', not one of our better inventions! We are good at producing ill-fated and non-commercial methods of travel, i.e. Titanic, Concord and the Hovercraft!

Yes our TV is being 'dumbed down' - 50% seems to be imported from American, %40 is American in style, only 10% is of any quality in my opinion!

I'm not a quiz or soap fan anyway!

Pits in comparison to your average American tv program, or to an earlier era in British broadcasting?

The latter - although even American television is marginally better in my opinion.
Like Malcolm I dislike soaps, British Tv appeared to be inundated with them. Even had them from Australia when I was there.

I understood from an interview with her that she had been a news reporter in Ireland? She also mentioned in that interview that she recieves alot of death threats. I enjoy her type of humor but, could do with a little less degradation. Of course it is that, that draws us to the show! Kevin

I first saw this so-called quiz show in England last September and I was horrified at the rudeness of this "person of the female gender" lording it over all the contestants!! I thought,"Thank the Lord we don't have shows like this in Canada or the States!"
Give me dear, harmless Regis Philbin any day for a quizmaster.

Hopefully they will pull the plug on "The Weakest Link" and let it die the death that it deserves.Such a degrading show for the people on the receiving end of this harridan's "wit"!!

For what it's worth, guys, almost every show in the afternoon on British TV is a blessed quiz show!! It's ridiculous and gets very boring day after day!!

Sorry,Malcolm,'cos I think you like her....

Terri

No Terri, I don't like any quiz shows much and I neither like or dislike Ann Robinson! She just acting, but if you don't like her 'act' that's fine with me.
