Had the QE1 not suffered the Normandie fate
where would she be today. Seawise University would have sailed till the 1974 fuel shortage.

Would she have been scrapped?
Would this beautiful ship have been turned into a museum like the Queen Mary?

Knut Kloster most likely would still have picked the much newer France at the time. He paid scrap value for her.

The Queen Elizabeth was a correction of all the Queen Mary's design deficiencies, plus all Cunard learned from the Normandie. Still the QM-1 was a more popular ship.

Any thoughts?

Yes it's to bad the QE-1 burned in Hong Kong.

If she were still afloat, the many pieces
of memorabilia I have would be worth even
more ...

What bothers me more than the demise of
this once great liner, is the total lack of
competence displayed by the Chinese in
their handling of her. ( They don't fly
Jets much better either )

In my opinion, the loss of the Queen, and the
Normandie, were the two greatest losses of
the great liners in my lifetime. the Ile De
France being a close second.

What a waste ...

It's hard to imagine two floating Hotels, the QM and QE!

The QM has had financial problems. She may be a great liner but the general public are not fighting to see her or stay onboard her!

I'm of the opinion that the QE would have been scrapped, anyway!

The queen Mary has had considerable financial success since RMS Foundation took over. In her first year (92/93) she lost $4.3m, this reduced significantly the next year, and since then she has made considerable profits ($5m in the last financial year). The last two occasions I stayed on board, the hotel was very busy as were the restaurants. She may still be wanting in many areas of maintenance and fitments, but financially I believe she does relatively well these days. Sadly I suspect that had QE1 remained alive, QM would not have been as unique. I don't believe that the RMS Foundation even start to understand the vast potential that a comprehensive and truly sensitive restoration could have, but regardless of that her future seems secure.

That is very good news! Hopefully the old girl will still be around for many years to come!

If you live within 'striking distance' of Long Beach, make sure that you DO visit her - she's breath taking!

The QM is likely to go nowhere.

She has a granite breakwater around her. It would take much time and money to dismantle it.

On weekends the QM is mobbed with tourists and is used for conferences and catering.
Reproducing her period furniture is not hard considering the quantities needed.

On further thought. An enterprising businessman like CY Tung may have after the oil shock of 1973, turned Queen Elizabeth into a floating apartment complex or such in Taiwan where housing is sold by the square inch.

Now that QM is profitable, I hope the Rembrandterdam is next.

One deal on the table is Rembrandterdam be a floating hotel/museum in her home port of Rotterdam or Amsterdam. Holland, like Taiwan is also short on land.

SOLAS 2010 will kill her, Seawind Crown, Victoria, and the Regal Empress too. [no solid hardwood walls, only 1/8"thk max. veneer on fire retardant substrate]

Not to stereotype like Barryboat does, but the Dutch are known for business acumen.
