Which is your favourite classic liner ? I have much loved the Carla Costa,a beautyful medium size ship that offered every thing you could desire.The cabins were very large and the suites simply wonderful,the cuisine and the service excellent,the open decks exceptional for sun lovers.After the tragic loss of this unfergettable ship now my favourite liner is the Oceanic(the only disappointing thing of this ship is the red hull of its former Premier days).I hope that this ship will reenter in service very quickly.

I would have to say that my favorite liner by far is the SS Canberra. I sailed when I was just a child of 9 (my first cruise) and then again at 19. Was a wonderful ship with so much history and such nice passengers and crew. As an American, I can say that we had a great time among all the Brits!!

I have several, but if I had to pick my absolute favorite, it would be the EMPRESS OF BRITAIN of 1931. No one, I mean no one, seems to remember this wonderful ship...

Canberra

[Sailmom, I was on Canberra, April 1973 from NYC-Carribean, maybe we were on at the same time]

There is no equal to those 2 in exterior design, interior design, engineering, and that unquantifiable feel of how they come together as a whole.
Nor can they ever be reproduced.

WORST SHIPS

Olympic/Titanic --by far

poor engineering thru-out and overdone 1st class interiors, dreary steerage.

Oriana of 1960 -ugly,ugly ship

Bismark-Majestic -badly built [hull would crack regularly] and cluttered superstructure, 1st class interiors- mannerist bombastic, 3rd class, Spartan and dingy.

Kind of you Sailmom, never got to sail on Canberra myself, but what a fan club she has
in Britain! have you been on Oriana or Aurora, I believe if you liked Canberra you would be right at home.

I agree with Rex the Empress Of Britain is my favorite classic liner. She does not get as much attention as she deserves. An interesting side note, prior to the building of the Queen Mary she was the largest ship the John Brown shipyard had ever built.
