Feb 15, 2001: A deal for the sale of Ms SEA (ex Gripsholm, Navarino, Samantha, Regent Sea) to AG Belofin investments (last owners of BELOFIN-1/BRITANIS) for a reported US $1.08 million was to be completed today. The ship will be moved to berth 206 (where BELOFIN-1's/BRITANIS sat for nearly five years) from her present moorings at Tampa in preparation for the one-way voyage to Indian or Pakistani breakers. In lieu of a tow, efforts will be made to restart the ship's Götaverken diesels.

Two photos of the SEA laid-up in Tampa, Florida.

Even in disrepair state, she's still a handsome looking ship.

Premier had looked into buying her, but could not get her machinery running during the evaluation period.

She was built along side the Sea Breeze at the Ansaldo shipyard.

Ansaldo built the Rex and the Andrea Doria.

What a sad end for another fine classic liner.Sorry I think that many others will have the same destiny(the Amerikanis and the Regent Star/Sea Harmony both laid up in Eleusis Bay were built during the same years).I know that the older vessels are expansive to operate but I don't understand the reason for which companies like Regal or Louis don't purchase some of them(particularly Louis that should replace at least three ship ,the Princessa Amorosa,Cypria and Marissa should consider to buy the Seawind Crown or the Regent Sun.They preferred to buy the old and tired Mermoz instead!)

I have heard rumors that Louis would buy another ship this year probably as a result of auction.
However I am not sure if this is the case at the moment because of the violence in Israel.
Louis will be canceling all the calls at Haifa and replacing them with ports as Alexandia or Beirut.
Another result of the Middle East crisis is that all three major cruise operators of Cyprus are in the situation of searching for new destinations in the Meditterranean to direct their ships. Rumours make notice of ports in Italy, Malta, Spain and of course Greek islands other than the "usual" ones

How sad, it was not possible to save the Sea! We had established a team to rebuild the ship to its original state and rename her Gripsholm, but even as the owner did have some patience, we did not have the time to raise enough money, even the businessplan looked very promising and agents were very positive.

Bye, Gripsholm, one of the finest liners ever - a very sad day for me.

Maybe she saves herself from the indignity of being grounded and gutted on a beach on the Indian subcontinent and during the tow she could slip away to the bottom of the ocean.

Christian, welcome on board!
A question: your group wanted to take her back to sea as a working cruise ship or use her in a static role? Too bad you didn't get the money.

Regards

Paulo Mestre

I understand that two complete decks of the ship were gutted in preparation for conversion to a casino that never happened. However the cabins, crew, working and machinery spaces along with the bridge remain intact. I suspect that if she was still in one piece and untampered with she may have found another buyer. I read a report in Ships Monthly that indicated that the remaining interiors and the engines were still in good order - but the cost of totally rebuilding the two decks was likely to be very high. With the Victoria being mooted for withdrawal soon, it is a sad time for these former Swedish liners.

I made a Christmas cruise on the Sea which included a trip into the Panama Canal with many nice memories. It is unfortunate to lose these ships. I was on the Sea Breeze this summer, and it gave me all that I needed. My first cruise was on the Amerikanis to Bermuda, of which I have not forgotten.

Oh well, onward and (?) upward.

I live in Miami, Florida a 5 hour drive from the Regent Sea, cruise ship. I am a cruise ship nut and photography is my other passion.
I have taken only two not so good pictures of her about two years ago but it was raining the intire one day visit. I would love to drive up to see it again, maybe go on board if possible for some more shots before she is distroyed by scrappers. I visited the Britanis three years ago and jumped the rope banding visiters abaord her. I got scared when i saw people cooking in her kitchen. She was fully furnished still and how power. I sailed on her three times. I have sailed aboard the sister ship to the Regent cruise, the Regent Sun in 1993. I so badly wanted a life ring from the decks of the Britanis as a keep sake, but with several calls to the owner was told nothing was for sale. I was told that the ship was going for scrap, three years later nothing was sold and the ship sank as a whole in the ocean, life ring and all. Does anyone have a contact for the Rgent Sea, would love to have the pictures and share with the Travel Page Suite? I hate to only have pictures posted like the Seabreeze and the Britanis sinking. Please E-mail me at
shipahoy@bellsouth.net. or call at 305-256-7058.
Thank you
Alan H. Miller

Alan, I was surprised to hear that when you visited the Britanis three years ago you stumbled accross people cooking in the kitchen and that the ship had power. I always wondered if a ship keeps a minimal crew when it is laid up. I noticed before on some of the tours of laid up ships (Britanis, Margarita L, Etc) that have been published on Maritime Matters that it appears the ships have electricity to turn on the lights, someone had to start the engine or generator. I guess maybe it depends on the owner of the vessel and how much they want to preserve their investment. I wonder if the Rembrant still has some crew members on her maintaining her?

It is bad enough to have a ship your have sailed be sold. It is worse yet to have a line you have enjoyed go out of business. But to have the shipped chopped up... It is a sad day

I think it is sad that the Sea's new owners would rather scrap her than put new life into her. While the Sea is 44 years old, she still looks like a good ship. While she was the Regent Sea she stopped at Juneau, Alaska once a week every summer until Regency Cruises went bankrupt. It is unfortunate that someone would rather send this beauty off to the scrappers for a puny sum ($1.08 million) than upgrade her to meet the SOLAS requirements, rebuild the decks that were gutted in the failed casino conversion, and put her back in service--possibly in the Caribbean and Alaska as Regency did in its heyday, as well as on round-the-world cruises. If she were put back in service, I would definitely want to travel on this classic. I wanted to when I was a kid, and recently had a dream about the Sea coming back to Alaska.
