the ship in that postcards is NOT the ss Italia, She was the mv SATURNIA,24,000 tons built by Monfalcone 1928 for Cosulich Soc. Triestina di Nav (Cosulich Line) 1932 Cosulic merged with Lloyd Sabaudo and Navigazione Generale Italia to form Italia Line. SATURNIA was taken by the USA after Sept 1943 became US Army hospital ship FRANCES Y. SLANGER. reverted to the Italians, restored to passenger condition sailed until 1965

ITALIA:built by Blohm & Voss,Hamburg,Germany as Kungsholm.Sold to the USA in 1942 and operated as the troopship John Ericsson.Sold in 1947 to Home Lines and refitted at the Ansaldo yards in Genoa.Employed in the Italy-South America route and after in the Genoa-New York route.In 1952 it was employed in the Hamburg-New York route.In 1959 replaced by the Hanseatic and assigned to the England-Canada trade.In 1960 converted into a fulltime cruiseship.Employed in 7 days cruises from New York to Nassau and in long cruises to Haiti.In 1964 sold to Bahama Enterprises and converted into a fledgling resort in Freeport under the name Imperial Bahama Hotel.After the bankruptcy of the group sold in 1965 and scrappedin the same year at Bilbao(Spain).Technical data:21.532 gross tons,609 feet long,78 feet wide,B&V diesels,twin screw,17 knots,1.319 passengers(213 first class,1.106 tourist class).For further informations:Passenger liners italian style by W.H.Miller,Carmania press,London 1996.

Yes, thank you Vulcania! It is said rather confusingly on the card's backside the name of the ship... there is a mention of "Italia" with a big font, and then "Saturnia" and "Vulcania" with smaller fonts... But now I know she's the Vulcania or Saturnia. How many passengers did they carry? And, because she might be the Vulcania, could you please tell me about her destiny, too?

Now I know she's the Vulcania or Saturnia. How many passengers did they carry?
How did the Vulcania end its career?

WoW that ship ITALIA is one fine looking ship, Reminds me of the 1930's White Star ships. What year was she launched ? Looks like her life boat davits carry two life boats each I forgot what type they are called but I would guess they are the type used in the 1930's for most ships of that time anyway ?

My first cruise was on the Italia in 1962 - seven days from NY to Nassau. Had a great time. I was 8 at the time.
