Fast forward to year 2020.

The QE2 is being scrapped at Alang, since Ghadani Beach has become an international superfund site with toxin levels that kill all living species in 20 minutes of exposure.

The SS Norway has become a Hong Kong Time Share.

King William christens the QE-3 weighing in at 200,000 tons.

Carnival has merged with United Airlines and Rosenbluth International creating a super travel monopoly.

The Rotterdam V has become a hotel/museum in her home port accross from the 'Hotel New York' which was HAL's old headquarters. It is frequented by art students studying mid 20th Century Dutch Modern.

SS United States collapses on itself due to rust in Philadelphia Harbor

All other pre 1980 tonnage is scrapped.

My prediction for future classics:

Firstly, why is QE2 being scrapped and Norway well saved?? isn't QE2 much more famous?? like i go to people have you heard of the QE2 and they go yea but when i say the Norway they go What the hell!?!

Secondly, I dont really think by 2020 (19 years time), Prince William will be King William...well not yet unless his father dies or something...

Thirdly, SS United States WILL NOT collapse on itself due to rust in Philadelphia Harbor because someone WILL buy her and fully restore her...just the question is when!!!

Fourthly, i dont think all other pre 1980 tonnage will be scrapped...highly unlikely...

Lastly, "My prediction for future classics", maybe QM2 but most of them are just going to be normal liners...some of themn even turn out like Fair Princess did...

I do not agree nor disagree with the predictions. The last US election demonstrated the fallacies in predicitions and polls.

HOWEVER: Yes the "Norway" will probably be scrapped. BUT if had remained the "FRANCE," I feel that the ship would have met a different fate. Then people "would have heard of her,"

People have not heard of the NORWAY? Yes, quite likely confused in the company of a vast mismash of "Norwegian Dream, Norwegian Star, and Norwegian thisandthat."

But the FRANCE would still be around!

I am being facetious

You are right Cambodge, you cannot predict the future, I agree that the QE2 is more famous.

However the Oriana of 1960 is afloat and her more famous running mate and much loved Canberra was scrapped.

Can't predict the future: Correct

I am trying to figure which ships will stand the test of time.

Due to the environment DuPoint has created a new type of plastic and system to bubble anything. In 2005 the U.S. was released from drydock and began its voyage to be bubbled at Cape. In the year 2020 the U.S. orbit has been stabilized and is now offering 10-20-&30 day cruises around the world.

Hey guys don't get too tense, it's a fun topic from desirod

Of course it's not possible to accurately predict the future, but we can have fun trying. (Who would have predicted the rise of the PC, Internet and mobile phone - not even IBM, Bill Gates or the telecom companies)

*Will cruise ships get bigger and bigger or have we reached a plato? (The Queen Eliz was the biggest for years, until Destiny!)

*Will we see a return to smaller newbuilds?

* Will cruising continue to grow?

* Will the Carib remain the No.1 destination?

*Will there be more cruise lines or just bigger ones?

*What facilities will tomorrow's ships have?

*Will ships ever become a popular method of travel again, opposed to just recreation?

I've no idea! Have you?

2020 is rather near, but some of Malcolm's questions may have revalence further into the future.

Will ships ever become a popular method of travel again, opposed to just recreation?

Unlikely for surface ships, but sometime in the 21st Century space travel is likely to increase. By the end of the century (2100) it is possible that line voyages between Earth & Moon and Earth & Mars will become common.

'Cruising' in near earth orbit and deeper into space may herald a boom in space tourism.

Surface Cruising as a leisure industry can only increase in the long term as the world becomes more wealthy.

Of course I hope that in 2020 there will be more and more cruise ships sailing around the world. In my opinion all the ships built between 1980 and 1990 will be scrapped; most of the modern cruise ships are not built to last, and for instance I can't see the Tropicale sailing for twenty years more. In the future new propulsion systems with lower fuel consumption will be developed and the newbuilding costs will be continuosly lowered; this will make building new ships cheaper than refurbishing the old ones.

Somewhere around 2020 AeroFlot(or however it's spelled) will be offering cruises to the moon for under 1 million. Making Moscow the new vacation destination for hundereds of billionairs. Carnival's much talked about take over of Russia remains tied up in the beaourocy of the Federation of Planets.

Times are changing...

...for example: I spend a lot of Money for my Trips round nearly the complete World in the last 22 Years...

...the Generation before, my Father, did his Adventure Trips for nothing and gets now an Pension for this Time. And he had the great Feeling, not to fly Aeroflot but to shot a lot of real Russians...

(he was Cannoneer on an Tiger Tank and Prisoner of War from May 10th 1945 until End of 1948).

It may be, we will become new Trouble in the Future, with Muslim Extremists, for example or with upcoming 3rd World Countries...

...wait and see, and drink Tea.

How about SPACEships

Look at the Coral Princess and those thrusters very conspicuous lol! No really I think that maybe..... no definatly QE2 will be scrapped (lets face it) Norway a casino or hotel, U.S "burned out" (think of the insurance)ships won't get much bigger ports can't hold that much steel!! And the rest well I dunno is there such a thing as a "classic" Carnival hehehe ok lets not get all serious these are only IDEAS!

I think cruise ships will get bigger, in 2020, the ultra voyager will be out for sure and other companies will be trying to compete and get the prize for the next biggest ship, i dont think this trend will slow down quickly because its been happening for a long time in the past like the Titanic for example and it will happen in the future to come as well.

I havnt just changed my username to match the topic, It's been like that for a while.

this is what I think :

QE2 will be a hotel and Museum of Cunard History in Southampton

QM2 will be the most famous ship afloat together with Queen Victoria and 2 more ships

Norway will be forgotten as she has been scrapped for 15 years now

SSUS has been scrapped for 15 years too

Carnival will be in serious financial problems forcing Cunard to break up with them and become independent by also creating a cargo line and an airline

Oiltankers will all be on the line of scrapping as the new fuel is Hydrogen Gas and is produced on land

I could say more about what I think but that would be political so I 'll stop here

Will any cruiseships (mid 1960's forward) have the life and durability of the Doulos or Britanis? Only their hulls know for sure..............

Aside from the SSUS, how many American-built hulls still survive? (And no, I'd be hard pressed to consider the Pride of America a US built hull.)

Well atleast we can see POA's hul is half American

. Anyhow there are 4 US-hulls left. They are MONTEREY, THE EMERALD, soon-to-be-scrapped SS UNIVERSE EXPLORER, and the INDY. Am I missing any others?

In the future....someone will build a giant floating city using hundreds of giant supertaker hulls..virtually create an island in the middle of the ocean. There will be an airport and a shipyard for cruise ships and "liners" to dock. It will be a utopian city where people live and work in a clean air environment. The classic QM2 will visit once in a while. QE2 will be docked there permanently as an add-on hotel option. This huge floating city will be positioned southeast of Florida, and also one off the coast of LosAngeles.

I have to disagree with the Fantasy class as a whole being classics by then. They are butt ugly. Now the Sovereign of the Seas will be a classic for sure. It should still be around as all it does is float back and forth to the Bahamas.
