The text below is borrowd from the excellent Queen Mary 2 Web site:

http://queenmary2.cjb.net/

"Accordingly, it's quite possible that in four years time we may well witness a very special maritime event (and a great photo
opportunity) when three generations of Cunard Queens come together at Long Beach, California.

The following year could see the delivery of yet another Queen, which has been tentatively named the Queen Victoria, as was the original Queen Mary. By then the ageing Queen Elizabeth 2 will be pushing forty and at the end of her economic life span as a cruise liner.

Thus the Queen Mary 2's newer sister ship could enter service as the Queen Elizabeth 3.

It's not unreasonable to speculate that the Queen Elizabeth 2 could possibly retire as another major attraction at Long Beach."

The Queen Mary 2's horn will be an exact replica of the one on the original Queen Mary so that her famous predecessor's voice will once more be heard on the ocean, it will be audible at a distance of ten miles.

I wonder if the "exact" replica will also feature the steam for the new horn? I believe the Queen Mary's horn was powered by steam, and if they are to recreate the original sound, then I wonder if the builders will use steam to power the horns. There is a difference in sound between steam and airpressure. Today the Queen Mary's horn is no longer powered by steam, so the sound is slightly different. Queen Mary also had three horns,(two on first stack and one on middle stack) I wonder if three replicas will be built?

I think it's unlikely that the QE2 would ever be retired in Long Beach, because the city of Long Beach has enough difficulty trying to maintain and make a profit with just the Queen Mary alone.

Yes, I agreed Barry. But maybe Carnival's redevelopment of the area/terminal will change that? I can't really imagine that Carnival guest will really be very interested in the history of Ocean Liners - but I could be wrong?

Malcolm,

I have stayed on the Queen Mary twice when visiting LA.

I was 7 years old when she was taken out of service. Glad she is still around so the generations beyond me can experience her.

Cunard, when the QE2 or Caronia stop at LA and pick up passengers, put up the passengers that fly into LA overnight on the Queen Mary and offer them the tour.

As a hotel she is well managed and reasonably priced, the ambience goes w/o saying.

I can't think of a more wonderful way to whet your appetite for a cruise.

desirod, I've not stayed on the Queen Mary, but I have visited her - yes she is breath taking! I love her. (After all she's British too )

My point is that the cruising public are not necessarily interested in Ocean liners. They are looking for a 'fun' time in a floating resort, not a history lesson. It's sad really

I think it's entirely possible that many cruise passengers that stay at the Queen Mary Hotel pre or post cruise would enjoy their visit, but some may develop an interest in ocean liners from visiting the Queen Mary. The Queen Mary is what sparked my fascination with liners, back in 1977. I think it's a great idea to have a cruise ship pier right there next to Queen Mary! You've got also remember that most cruise ship passengers about to embark on a cruise won't have the time to wander around the Queen Mary, they usually get there to the cruise pier just prior to embarkation, and their excitement level is high as they wait to go aboard their cruise ship. Even when they get back from their cruise, they are usually shuffled onto a bus and taken to the airport. The Queen Mary would make an excellent pre or post cruise package for cruisers though.

By the way, Hotel Queen Mary is not cheap, it cost a fortune to stay their, At least $105 - $125 per night(inside stateroom), and as much as $300+ per night.

Barry, if that is $125 per cabin, for two people - that is not unusual for a UK hotel, let alone one of such historic interest.

Many London hotels cost a lot more than that!

Barryboat - Wake up and smell the coffee - US$125.00 - that's cheap - even if it is per person - a real steal if it's a room rate for a couple.
On our September QE2 trip we paid US$442.00 PER PERSON at the Millennium Britannia in London - granted it included transfer from the airport to the hotel, breakfast and transfer to join the ship in Southampton - pricey - no matter how you look at it.

Just did a conversion - at todays rates - US$442 = UKL308 and in CA$684 - per person yet - I'm sorry now that I checked!!

Green, even for London that is rather expensive...but was it any good? I've not heard of that Hotel - let alone stayed in it!

(Not as good as the Queen Mary, I suspect!)

"It's not unreasonable to speculate that the Queen Elizabeth 2 could possibly retire as another major attraction at Long Beach."

I don't know how the Brits could stand for that. I mean, isn't it bad enough that we've already got the Mary at Long Beach? Wouldn't we be adding insult to injury?

Better than burning up in Hong Kong like her sister: the Queen Elizabeth 1

QE2 would steal thunder from QM1. QM1 foundation is a politcal hornet's nest.

QE2 could be transformed into a dockside hotel in any port city with a room shortage.

Whilst watching the rotting splendor of Western civilisation's last Golden Age from the obscurity of the fair isles of Oceania, I'm reminded of the old British adage about being nice to foreigners (Americans) - they can't help it...

concerning blowing the replica whisitle with steam---this should be no problem as most if not all motorships have boilers(aux and waste heat) The replica whisitle could be desinged to be blown with 125# steam pressure

It COULD be designed to blow steam, but WILL the builders design the whistles that way?

Gerry?
