Which is the best italian liner for you? This is my personal classification:Leonardo da Vinci,Raffaello & Michelangelo,Andrea Doria & Cristoforo Colombo,Galileo Galilei & Guglielmo Marconi,Oceanic. Most of these are gone, others were converted into cruise ships, often with no care(the Eugenio c.,Guglielmo Marconi,Federico C.were simply ruined by owners who conceived the strange idea of "party boats").I think that the classic liners have yet a future in the cruise bussiness(Many persons don't love the megaships).

I agree with your personal classification and I like it, but I find a bit strange that you don't mention the REX and the CONTE DI SAVOIA. After all they were the biggest Italian liners ever built and even REX won the Blue Ribband for the Italia Line. Besides in my opinion they were among the finest ships of their time.
My Italian liners list:

- Rex
- Conte Di Savoia
- Raffaello/Michelangelo
- Leonard da Vinci
- Guglielmo Marconi/Galileo Galilei
- Andrea Doria/Cristoforo Colombo
- Augustus/Guilio Cesare

Regards

What about the Costa Ships?
Does abybody like them?

Also, the SS CostaRiviera wasn't as ruined as the MS Edinburgh Castle and the SS Seabreeze, but it lacks some nice things.

Have a magnifico time,
Jesse

I AM A BIT BIASED GALILEO AND MARCONI, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CONVERSIONS OF ANGELINA LAURO, ACHILLE LAURO AND FAIRSTAR WHILST FAIRSTAR WAS TECHNICALLY AN ITALIAN IT WAS RUN BY ITALIANS AND A GREAT SHIP THEY ALL HAD WIDE PROMENADE DECKS A GOOD PROMENADE DECK WINS ME OVER EVERYTIME. I WAS SO DISAPOINTED WHEN I WENT ON CANBERRA AND FOUND HER PROMENADE DECK PINTED GREEN METAL

To Jesse C.The old Costa liners were wonderful ships with a great service.I particularly loved the Carla Costa and the Enrico Costa. The Costa Riviera after the conversion into the American Adventure is a Ship that lack of personality!

Oh, so it wasn't Costa's fault.
I would rename the ship to SS CostaMarconi's Riviera

Any questions?

Personally I liked very much the ACHILLE LAURO.

But here a question: When you go the the V-Ships website, there is a picture of a ship´s funnel which is colored yellow. A painter is painting a huge "V" on it but you can clearly see that once there was a "C" on it. So, I guess it was a Costa-ship before. Who can tell me which ship changed the fleet from Costa to V-Ships ?

To Patrick:I agree with you it's a funnel of a former Costa ship(from the form of the funnel could be the Federico C but this ship has never joined the Vships fleet). It's a great mistery !

The inter-war VICTORIA was an excellent Italian take on Art Deco and Modernism. Apart from that I like the CONTE DI SAVOIA and the CONTE GRANDE.

Nope, the Switzerland doesn't have her funnel painted in V-Ships livery, just white with black topping. Besides the funnel shape in the picture doesn't look like the one on Daphne/Danae.
