The fantastic "Liners" series is being shown again on UK TV - Channel 4 on Saturdays between 7.00 - 8.00pm. It is the best history of Ocean Liners that I have ever seen! Trust me

DO NOT MISS IT AT ANY COST!

(Thanks for the info. Scottylass)

I watched the first episode for the second time on Saturday. If anything it was better. What was fascinating was seeing the faces behind all those passenger ship authors; Bill Miller, Arnold Kludas, Maxtone-Graham, Patrick Wall and many others. I've read books by all of them. Rated 100A1+ at Lloyds and elsewhere.

For those interested there is a book that accompanies the TV series.

Terry:

Is this the Rob McAuley book? I have that one.

I the watched the programme the first time it was on, and also watched it last Sat night. It certainly was quite a programme, footage of some of the greats of all times. I also have it videotaped, so think I might drag it out and watch it all from beginning to end again.

Nice to see you back at the board
Cheers
M.

Yes Scottylass the same book. My absence was courtesy of BT. They cut me off for being a Light User and then took two weeks to connect up again. It's a nightmare dealing with them.

have you tried the new trivia question on Joe's trivia post below?

If my memory serves me right, the "Liners" show you were talking about,Malcolm, has been shown here in Ontario on PBS from Buffalo,NY.

I may be wrong in the actual TV station but I do remember seeing the ships Malcolm mentioned including the horrendous(in my mind)"World City"!! And yes,it was an extremely interesting program.I hope it will be shown again here at some point in time.

Someone else out there must have seen the program as well.....it was this year sometime prior to my cruise in August.

Well, the series is four years old I think (1996, before the ocean liner "hype" caused by "Titanic") but it's one of the best ever made about ocean liners. Many footage of the famous ocean liners including the "lost film of the Titanic" that shows her arriving at the graving dock of Harland & Wolff.
The sound score is great, the best on a TV show about ocean liners (included also is the famous Queen Mary song).
I must agree with Malcom, the fourth episode because it showed a glimpse of the future (including the floating cities... yuk) and also all the now familiar cruise ships (Norway, Carnival Destiny, the Disney ships, it even mentioned the Eagle project of RCCL!!).
I recorded the show 2 years ago when it played on portuguese television but I have seen it on Discovery Channel.

History Channel also has a great amount of ocean liners shows, including a 4 episode special about Titanic with interviews of all the famous people related to the disaster, Eva Hart, Walter Lord and Robert Ballard.
They also a one episode special about ocean liners, also about the disasters of Andrea Doria and Republic.

Regards
Paulo Mestre

The final part of " Liners" is on UK TV on Satuday 28th Oct., CH4 at 7.00pm.

It is one of my favourite episodes. It looks at liners of the future.

It mentioned the transformation of the SS France into the Norway as an example of business foresight, and used Carnival Destiny (then a new ship) as an example of things to come. There was also an interesting section of the proposed 'World City' - as it's name implied, not so much a ship as a floating City.

Don't miss it!
