(Joint) Biggest cruise ship in the world, explorer of the Seas is due at Southampton today (Thur 5/10/00)!

I think she will be in the UK for at least the weekend, if not longer? I may well go and take some pictures of her.

I wish I had a boarding pass MY local TA is visiting her and staying overnight onboard!

Malcolm,

Explorer in Southampton today and leaves tomorrow at 1900 hrs. She will Arrive back in Southampton Sunday 8th Oct 0600 - 1800 hrs, then back again on Tues 10th 0600 - 10 am. Last two down as Private Charters I guess for the Travel Agents jollies.

Its nice to see that she will be flagged "Norwegian", and not one of those flags of convenience like Liberia etc...

Cheerio
M.

I phoned up RCL today (Thursday). The girl who answered the phone confirmed that Explorer would be there today at the QE2 terminal, but she had little idea when the ship would be in or out of port. Yes it's all a big Jolly for the TA's.

If any UK TA's out there have spare boarding passes - I'm your man

Where she's going next? Does anyone know if she's expected to visit more European Ports?

Sunday 8th October, 7.30pm (GMT)

I've just returned from a very pleasant day trip to Southampton to see 'Explorer of the Seas'. (A 300 mile round trip from London). There seemed to be plenty of interest from the general public. The sun even shone! Although I did not have a boarding pass, I was able to view her from the dockside and the walkway above the QE2 terminal, where she was berthed (not so far away from the Titanic's original departure point). I also took a harbour boat tour which offered even better views. In fact there was a collection of 'little' ships viewing her.

She is certainly very impressive in terms of Size - this is not surprising considering that she is the world's biggest cruise ship (O.K. joint biggest). She is particularly broad and tall. (However, she is still 15ft shorter than the SS Norway). Her profile looks quite sleek, from a distance, but as you get closer she begins to resemble a tower block! She looks massive viewed bow onwards, no matter how far you are away from her. The lifeboat design looked interesting. However, it did not look as if they could be used as tenders (or can they?) At the stern there appeared to be a little 'house' on top of the deck - maybe someone can enlighten me as to what is?

It is a pity that they did not paint her hull navy blue. Never the less, it is pretty difficult not to feel some excitement about her presence. It goes without saying that I would rather be onboard looking out, rather than on the dock, looking in.

She is undertaking several cruises to 'nowhere' for Travel Agent's and I understand that she will leave Southampton for New York on Tuesday at 10.00am. She is unlikely ever to return to our shores.

(If you live in the UK and missed 'Explorer', you can always look forward to the arrival of the 'Golden Princess' in May 2001. She not quite as big, but plenty big enough to cause a stir).

Malcolm,

Did she have the same daft logo on her side:
"Like no vacation on earth" or have they now corrected the English and put "Like no OTHER vacation on earth" ?

Gerry, I only saw the ships name on the bow and the RCL logo on the stern.

I do not recall "Like no vacation" at all?

Malcom:

I don't know if the vacation slogan is painted on Explorer, but you can clearly read it on the photo of Voyager you posted.

I'm pretty sure that the slogan is NOT on Explorer.

Hi Malcom:

I should know by now not to doubt you! The photo of Explorer arriving in New York reveals that , as you said, the silly slogan is NOT painted on the side.

It would appear as though our criticisms of this practice resulted in its exclusion from the Explorer's hull. I considered it to be quite tacky when I first set eyes on it, as did a number of other folk on this board. Kudos to RCI for paying attention (assuming this is the case of course).
