Hello all,
Following on from the successful gaining of info about the Northern Star, could anyone help me with information regarding the MV Arawa, another Shaw Savill ship on the UK to Australia/NZ voyages. She was the vessel my family and I sailed on to New Zealand, and last info I have on her is that she was used as a car ferry somewhere in Northern Europe. Again, any help appreciated.

Hi...wasn't she one of the 3 Royal Mail 'A' class? A couple of them ended up as auto carriers for Uglands and another as a sheep carrier....peter

Shaw savill ran two Arawa's on their service to New Zealand, the older one being built in 1922 and scrapped in 1955. The second one, which is the more likely ship, was built to run from Britain to South America as the Arlanza in 1960. One of three very attractive sister ships, their time on that service was a scant 9 years. In 1969 all three ships were transfered from Royal Mail Lines to their sister company Shaw Savill and placed on the Australia/New Zealand run. Arlanza was renamed Arawa at this point.

With Shaw Savill the ships carried 516 passengers in a single class. (They were three class on the South American run.) but also had vast cargo capacity which was hard to fill. They carried a lot of New Zealand meat to Britain but not much else. Arawa lasted only 2 years with Shaw Savill before being sold with her sisters to be converted into car carriers for a Norwegian company. In this conversion these one beautiful vessels were turned into ugly floating boxes. Arawa become the Hoegh Transit. Arawa finally ended her days at a Tiawanese scrapyard in 1981. Her name at this time was Trotter.
