LA Times ran an article today about a new hotel planned for Vegas - "* An outsize reproduction of the Titanic that would include an iceberg casino and time-share condos in fake smokestacks."

Just thought I'd share!

It's a cool idea but it probably won't come to fruition. The man behind it, Bob Stupak (sp?) is fighting a bitter feud with Las Vergas authorities who have so far barred him from getting permission to build the Hotel Titanic. It's been an issue in Vegas for about three years now, ever since TITANIC fever broke with the James Cameron flick.

WOuldn't it be cool if he was able to overcome the obstacles and get it built, though?

Personally I think it would be in utterly bad taste. Timeshare condos in the funnels?! How tacky is that! The Titanic was one of the most beautiful ocean liners ever built. She had the size and space of the later generation of superliners yet contained all her luxury within a very sleek and well balanced profile. Her loss was one of the greatest maritime tragedies of all time, and they plan to commemorate this by building a shorebound replica in the middle of a city not exactly renowned for its elegance or understatement. I hope it NEVER happens.

I lived in Las Vegas in the '80's, and Bob Stupack was a character back then. That was before Vegas ultra-blossomed into the mega-city it is today. Back then, it had only about 200,000 people; today it has, I think, over a million. He operated Vegas World which, at that time, was a rather sleazy place, beyond the edge of the strip (which ended, at that time, at the Sahara). He was always running for any type of public office, and would make the corniest political commercials you have ever seen. He's always coming up with whacky ideas, most of which never see fruition (the one that did, quite successfully, was upgrading Vegas World and building that 1,000 foot tower). I doubt if his Titanic Hotel and Casino scheme will ever see the light of day.

nzmike - nobody would suggest that a Titanic hotel in Vegas would be an adeqaute homage to a liner like "Titanic". I think we all recognize it would be tacky, just as Vegas is tacky - but for one thing, Stupack is not going to get permission to build it (and who knows if he even has the financial backing to pull it off) but I think you are overreacting to tis tackiness by saying it's not worthy of "Titanic". After all, who would claim Caesar's Palace does a fair job if representing Imperial Rome in all its glory? Its only a hotel/casino, after all.

Mauretania - yes I see your point, it just seems rather demeaning to the memory of the ship and the disaster to build such a frivolous memorial. If they were suggesting building a shoreside replica of the ship that was truly accurate and had the dignity and presence of the original I would have responded differently. It just makes me sad that people have such little appreciation of the ship that they could do something like this. Perhaps I should visit Las Vegas before I comment further!!

nzmike - I don't think a visit to Las Vegas will make you feel any better about the proposed Titanic Hotel! :-) But take heart in this: maybe, just maybe, even a tacky replica of the Titanic will serve to spark interest in the history of the real thing. Today, the Titanic is a hot topic of interest after a few years of dormancy. Although ship-o-files like ourselves have had a sustained interest, the interest of non-shippers has waned.

Some of the reawakened interest was due to the discovery of the wreck, and much was due to James Cameron's film.

Although not a fit memorial, a Vegas hotel would be a longer lasting reminder - something that introduces the disaster to future generations and perhaps gets them interested enough in this event to explore the genuine history for themselves.

This would be a way of keeping this tragedy "awake" in the public consciousness, so that it does not get lost in the overflowing vaults of history. And I believe keeping the disaster alive in the hearts and minds of future generations, would be a fitting tribute to the people who lost their lives to one of the greatest crimes of human arrogance ever.

Or do you think I'm trying too hard to find a silver lining? :-)

Mauretania - you make a good point. I just hope that the future generations who visit the RMS Titanic, port of registry Las Vegas, don't come away thinking, "Wow, is this what the Titanic was like!" This may not be a valid comparison, but I see it like the Queen Mary - she is still in existance and still a wonderful ship to see, but a visitor who knows nothing about the ship would fail to grasp the real magic of the Queen by surveying those California-vandalised interiors complete with candy store and ye olde fudge factory. But yes, I understand what you are saying and maybe in the long run it would result in benefits.
