Hello pingpui,

The biggest superliner (not cruise ship) built as tonnage was the QUEEN ELIZABETH, 83,673 grt.

Bye.

It all depends what you mean by 'superliner? Did you know that 'Gross Tonnage' is not a measure of a ships weight, but their volume?

****Top Ten Biggest Cruise Ships (in terms of gross registered Tonnage)****

Voyager of the Seas
142.000

Grand Princess
108.806
Carnival Triumph
102.000
Carnival Destiny
101.353
Disney Wonder

Disney Magic
83.338
Rhapsody of the Seas
78.491
Vision of the Seas
78.491
Galaxy
77.713
Mercury
77.713

A sad picture, the Queen Elizabeth after the fire.

(Not the Queen Mary, as the web site says!)

Malcolm, Pingpui asked "what WAS the biggest SUPERLINER" and not what IS the biggest CRUISESHIP.
That's why I answered this brave Lizzy...and yes it seems I perhaps know gross tons are not a measure of weight.

Bye.

Vaccaro, I'm sure that your answer is probably the one that pingpui wanted.

However, I was not clear if Pingpui meant 'Ocean Liner' or 'Cruise Ship'?

I'm sure that you know your 'gross tons' but maybe some folk don't?

Actually, the biggest "superliner" is the Carnival Triumph, as the term "superliner" was a term created by Carnival to refer to their Holiday class ships, but has been extended to the Fantasy and Destiny class ships.

I also believe that the term "oceanliner" is trademarked to HAL, so only their ships are "oceanliners."

It's sad that the Queen Elisabeth is gone, but at least we still have her sister the 'Queen Mary' at Longbeach, CA.

Nice picture Malcolm.
However a sad picture since she's shown at Hong Kong as SEAWISE UNIVERSITY just before being repainted white...and her near end.
I have a picture taken just before the one you posted while she's laid up at Port Everglades with the FEDERICO C and the FRANCE on the same photo.
Bye.

Hi...the term liner came into common usage with the change from sail to steam to denote a ship carrying passengers on a regular schedule. ie. a 'liner' belonging to White Star Line Ltd. Cargo liners usually meant those on a regular schedule which also carried a few passengers.
It's a generative name so I doubt that anyone can trademark that....peter

nathan,
Actually, Carnival appropriated the term "superliner" and made it a trademark but they did not invent it. It was a term in colloquial usage for many years in reference to the big Trans Atlantic liners like NORMANDIE and QUEEN MARY.
