Monday, 12th June 2000, in Moscow

At 2.30 pm local time, in front of the haed office of the Sovcomflot Shareholding Corporation in Moscow, the general manager Vadim D. Kornilov announced the successful purchase of the famous UNITED STATES.
The glamorous liner, currrently docked in Philadelphia, will soon be town by Russian tug-boats over the Atlantic to the Severney A. Zhdanov Yard in St. Petersburg. There the ship will go under a 60 Million dollar conversion and refurbishment to make the ship ready for first-class cruises around the whole world for basically European passengers. The recently signed refurbishment program of the Russian shipyard
is the biggest of a cruiseship which has ever been refurbished there. This project will not only provide a fantastic ship to the Russain fleet but will also, provide new working places for people living in the surrounding area of the yard in St. Petersburg.
The ship shall become Sovcomflot´s finest, and proud to fly the Russian flag. With this ship aquisition, Vadim D. Kornilov further wants to show that Russia is still able to realize a project about a famous ship with which the States did not seem to get ready with.
Also a new name has been chosen for this beautiful liner already: MIKHAIL GORBATSCHOW. It will give back this ship it´s real strength, with a name of a real strong former Soviet president.

And now, tell me, is this not one of these kinds of jokes where some of you guys would get a heart-attac if it was a real story...???
I hope you won´t kill me for this joke...

Soit/soyez prudent Patrick, sur ce site les Américains sont plus nombreux que nous Européens...et en plus il parait qu'ils sont plus costauds... :-)...mais bon, on vendra chèrement notre peau...

Kill you?...no Patrick.
When I began to read your post and saw she was purchase by Russian I looked my watch and thought "Hmm...this is not April 1st but maybe June 12th is a special date in Luxembourg I ignore?"
It would be rather "strange" indeed, the magnificient (here I'm not ironic when I use this adjective) BIG U, built during cold war as a real pride and strength of USA before the Space Adventure and competition, passes to "Soviets"!
But joke aside, if we look at several other Russian cruise ships, I'm sure SS UNITED STATES (oops, sorry "MICKAIL GORBATCHOV") will be in good hands. They are good sailors and I'm sure they would care very well of this fabulous liner.

Always joke aside, I sincerely hope this master piece will soon have a better future, sailing or as a museum/hotel/business center.

Bye...et pour le week-end prochain, à quoi auront nous droit? :-)

God I was furious until I saw the joke part. You are correct. My blood was racing!, My temples were flaring!, and my pride was at the bottom of my stomach!

Someone has to send this joke to the Members of Congress that have the power to preserve this great piece of American History and Pride. I would rather it turn into a portside hotel than get in the hands of another country. Luckily we got her back from her Turkish owners. Now we can't get ourselves together to do anything with her.

If any of you are in the Philly area, this weekend is the annual meeting of the Save the SS United States Organization.

17 June 2000
Philadelphia, PA
more details www.ssunitedstates.org

There are 3 potential buyers for her right now that are very serious. One from Las Vegas, one from New York, one undisclosed.

God save the SS United States!, better yet WE need to save her.

Good joke Patrick!

I'd rather see the Russians buy her, than see her rust away But I'm not an American!

I too am not an American, and I agree with Malcolm, if it's left up to the States, the Big U is not going to be revived, I mean they have had all these years to do something and she is still sitting there... It would be better to see her converted by any nation then see her sitting in that dock, dying.

It's a shame Big U fans such as ourselves can not buy her, start up a fund or something...

Good one Mate,
You had me going then, I was just about to send your info to our WorldShip Society in Melbourne, I guess I would have had to hide for a while had I have done so..
Regarding the Big U we could have her down here at Ayers Rock, Would THAT be a tourist attraction or what. !!! :-)

Thank you guys !
Anyway, I´d be happy to see this beautiful ship afloat again, but in it´s original colors, just like she was in her best time.
Hope that none of our cruisepage-mates died even before opening this topic...

I figured that was a crock, because if anything like that would have occurred, I would have heard about it. And of course, would have had a major coronary.

That would have been especially funny on April 1st.
